Welcome to 5th grade math unit on the order of operations .

WHAT Should the order of operations be? PEMDAS

In this UNIT WE would learn the following In this UNIT WE would learn the following. Students will be able to describe the meaning of each Math vocabulary in the acronym (knowledge) PEMDAS. Students will be able to list the order of mathematical operations. (Knowledge) Students will be able to describe a mathematical equation in order of operation. (Comprehension) s) Students will use the order of operation to complete a mathematical worksheet (Application) Students will Analyze an excerpt, concerning the history, highlighting the beginning of the order of operations. (Analysis)

Essential Question for the Unit

Essential questions include ? Why should mathematical operations be done in order? What does the word PEMDAS mean? What acronym could we use to remember PEMDAS and the order of operations? Why do we need to know and understand mathematics vocabulary? How will learning the history of the beginning of the order of operations help us in our math class?

Standards Include the following. CCSS Math Content 5. OA. A1 Standards Include the following . CCSS Math Content 5.OA. A1. Use parentheses bracket or braces in numerical expressions and evaluate expressions with these symbols. CCSS ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.

Lesson 2 In this lesson students will be able to list the order of mathematical operations. Warm Up : Students will write out the acronym PEMDAS and what it standards for. They will also write the phrase that allows them to recollect PEMDAS.

Standards CC.8.6.6-8. A. Write arguments focused on discipline-specific content.  Introduce claim(s) about a topic or issue, acknowledge and distinguish the claim(s) from alternate or opposing claims, and organize the reasons and evidence logically

Evidence Assessment Create flashcards explaining the meaning of each word in the acronym PEMDAS.   In their small groups students, will list of 4 words each describing a math vocabulary and mathematical operation. .

Evidence Assessment Students will be write out three numerical operations each. They will solve them individually and present to the class the order of operations.   Students will complete numerical operations worksheet

Lesson 1 KWL On PEMDAS, worksheets will begiven out by teacher. In this lesson, students will be able to describe the meaning of each Math vocabulary in the acronym (knowledge) PEMDAS. Materials needed include, Papers, Pencils, Exercise books and promethean Board. Students will be given a warm up.  KWL On PEMDAS, worksheets will begiven out by teacher.

Classwork: Teacher will discuss the words and display the symbols e. g Classwork: Teacher will discuss the words and display the symbols e.g. Parenthesis () Exponents 4(2) Multiplication x Division \ Addition + subtraction -  Teacher will also emphasize the acronym as: Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally.   Students will be given a flash card and will write the full meaning of each letter in PEMDAS out. They will use a dictionary computer to find the definition of the symbol and write that on the other side of their flashcard.

Lesson 2 In this lesson students will be able to list the order of mathematical operations. Warm Up: Students will write out the acronym PEMDAS and what it standards for. They will also write the phrase that allows them to recollect PEMDAS.

Classwork: Teacher will model listing Addition vocabulary, by giving the word SUM. Students will then write down four more addition vocabulary words in their small groups. (Language Arts) Teacher will model listing subtraction words by giving the students the word Less than. Students will then write down four more subtraction vocabulary words. Assignments Students will be divided into two small group where they will list ten vocabulary words each that that are used in mathematics addition and subtraction vocabulary.

Lesson 3 In this lesson students will be able to describe a mathematical equation in order of operation. (Comprehension)

Classwork: Teacher will model an example of writing an equation in the order of operation. Students will write ten of their own equations and solve the problems using the order of operation Assignment: Students will write out three numerical operations each. They will solve them individually and present to the class the order of operations.

Lesson plan 4 In this class students will use the order of operation to complete a mathematical worksheet (Application) Classwork: Students will complete Lesson 1.5, and 1.6 pg. 11, 12,13, 15 in Go Math standards practice Book

Assessment Students will be assessed with a Chapter 1 Practice from the Common Edition Go Math Standards practice book.

Lesson 5 Students will use the order of operation to complete a mathematical worksheet (Application)

Classwork: Students will complete Lesson 1. 7, and 1. 8 pg Classwork: Students will complete Lesson 1.7, and 1.8 pg. 16, 17,18, in Go Math standards practice Book. Assessment Students will be assessed with by completing pg. 50, 51 in their Go Math textbook.
