The College System What are residential colleges? The 10 individual Colleges create a small unique community within the larger university setting Each College has a different & unique theme UCSC colleges are not assigned by major

Crown College Science, Technology, & Society The mission of Crown College is to promote intellectual, personal, and social success, and to provide an ethical and inclusive living and learning environment. Crown College was founded in 1967 as the third college in the UC Santa Cruz system. Our theme, “Science, Technology, and Society,” explores the relationship of science and technology within the world around us. Although traditionally viewed as the “science college”, half of our student body major in fields other than science.

Privacy of Records & Confidentiality FERPA (Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act) Federal law that protects the privacy of your academic records. Your academic records and academic decisions are yours. Our role is to help you make informed decisions and support you along the way. Privacy vs. Confidentiality We guarantee privacy, but cannot guarantee confidentiality as it relates to safety. There are confidential resources on campus. We will cover this more in the fall and can answer questions anytime.

Crown Core Course Only First Year Scholars (Honors) take Core in Fall Quarter CRWN 80A (5) or 80B (5): Depends on satisfaction of writing & composition prerequisites. Frosh that are ELWR satisfied prior to Fall Quarter CRWN 79 (2) taken in Fall quarter (meets the PR-E GE category). CRWN 80A or 80B (5) taken in Winter 2017 quarter: Depends on satisfaction of writing & composition prerequisites. Frosh that are non-ELWR satisfied & International scoring 6 on AWPE WRIT 20 (5) in Fall quarter. CRWN 80A (5) in Winter 2017 quarter. International Students with score of 5 or below on AWPE WRIT 25, 26, 27 (5) in Fall quarter (depending on placement) CRWN 80A (5) in Winter 2017 quarter if WRIT 27 taken in fall, otherwise continue on Writing Track. All others take WRIT 1 (5) course offered by Writing Program when track complete & take CRWN 80B (5) in Winter 2018.

Math Placement Math Placement can be determined in one of the following ways: Complete an assessment: Students may complete an assessment in ALEKS-an online assessment, learning, and knowledge space- to determine their math placement ALEKS also provides math instruction, students can use the learning modules in ALEKS to work towards improving their placement. Prior to completing an assessment, all students must review the guidelines. Use calculus test credit: Students have entered with AP or IBH test credit for calculus may use their test credit to determine their placement. Visit Calculus Test Credit Transfer math course credit: Students who have completed a college-level math course may be able to use that course for their math placement, for more information visit: Transfer Course Credit

Creating Your Fall Schedule Frosh (ELWR sat.) (Non- ELWR sat.) & Frosh International (Score 6 on AWPE) (Scholars) Frosh International (Score 5 or less on AWPE) CRWN 79 (2) (Meets PR-E GE) WRIT 20 (5) CRWN 80A or 80B (5) WRIT 25, 26, 27 (5) GE (5) GE or Major or Prereq. w/Lab (5-7) GE or Major or Prereq. w/Lab (5-7) Total: 12-17 Total: 15-17 15 credits= full time (15 x 3 quarters x 4 years = 180 for graduation) 12 credits = full time for FA (12 x 3 quarters x 5 years = 180 for graduation) Must complete 36 credits per year for minimum progress requirements Lower Division (0-99) ONLY

Checklist for Graduation…

General Education (GE) What do all the codes mean? Develops your skills in a wide range of subjects giving you a well rounded education. Take one course per category. AP/IBH/Transfer courses may satisfy some of your GE requirements. Complete C1 & C2 this year if possible! MYTH: Take all your GE courses in your first two years. GE’s can be spread out throughout your four years of enrollment GE courses are good balancing courses, especially when you are taking challenging courses in your major

Choosing A Major Does Major = Career? No! Considering a particular major? Take a GE course in an area that interests you or possibly an elective course. Considering a major in STEM? Take MATH & LD prerequisite courses early to stay on track & determine if the major is a good fit. Choose what you LOVE & something that fits with your academic strengths. Consider what you want to study for the next four years. Become familiar with major requirements in ALL majors that you are considering (look for courses that overlap). DO YOUR RESEARCH. Visit the Career Center Early!

Proposed Major Declared Major Major Qualification Proposed Major Declared Major How to qualify for a major: Each department has specific steps to follow to declare the major: Taking specific major courses. Meet a minimum GPA requirement in specific major courses and/or overall GPA. Some majors limit how many non-passing grades (NP or grades lower than C) in qualifying courses are acceptable. Students entering as Freshmen must declare no later than the 6th quarter. Early planning for some majors is NECESSARY in order to meet declaration deadline & to stay on track to finish on time. DO YOUR RESEARCH: Know what you need to take to qualify & how to apply for the major. ≠

Attend TWO Major Advising Sessions TRULY UNDECIDED Be sure to fill out your enrollment worksheet with the following: Undecided Major Workshop College 8, Room 250 12:15PM-1PM (Session B) Learn about strategies & tools to begin the process of major exploration at UCSC Identify Two Advising Clusters of interest Attend the recommended major advising sessions listed in the chart Fall course enrollment ideas, with possible alternate choices What courses are required to be able to declare this major? Is there a prerequisite course you need prior to enrolling in a major qualifying course? What grades are required to declare the major?

Tips For Online Enrollment Learn the vocabulary-Example: MATH 3-01 Keys to using the online UCSC Fall Schedule Meeting prerequisites Math Placement Closed Course? Identify possible alternate courses Utilize the waitlist; if a class is closed-remember to “Swap” and watch out for time conflicts Enroll in at least 12-15 credits even if you plan to swap later Shopping Cart vs. Enrolled Look for the green check mark and print your schedule Courses in the shopping cart are not enrolled and do not save your spot in the course
