Mrs. Pichon’s 6th Grade ELA Class

Goals for this year Develop the whole gifted child (social, emotional, intellectual) Integrate in technology as much as possible Develop a love for reading and writing in your child through creating Independent Reading goals and communicating how their voices can be heard through their writing Allow the students to pursue their passions in a safe environment Work on collaboration and teamwork Continue to foster a relationship with the homeroom teachers and educate them on gifted children Communicate to your child that he/she is important, has unique abilities, and is a crucial part of our class

Activities Intern: Miss Kat Personality in a box/bag Getting to know you activities with 5th grade Power of Words Writing Non-fiction focus: shark articles/text structures and features Caught YA Spelling (two weeks/apply skills) Commercial analysis/persuasive

Future Plans First novel, The Giver/dystopian & utopian societies/literature circles while we read Persuasive writing on topic of choice (this week) Integrate in Scope Magazine with a variety of articles Use the iPads for a variety of projects in class Create IDR projects each nine weeks/meet in groups to discuss goals Caught YA: going slower this year/focusing on teamwork to discuss skills Continue using Quizlet as a way to practice spelling Revise website Travel to Ms. Drago’s room

Math Goals Work on showing their work when solving problems Focus on being neat when showing work Be able to orally explain what they did and be able to explain it with the class Increase use of mathematical practices and understanding of these practices. Make math applicable to the real-world. Look to find ways to connect it to their lives Use Scholastic Math magazine to show engaging math activities

Ways you can help out… If your child is going to be absent, please let me know ASAP. I try to get work together so your child does not feel behind. Keep me posted if there is something going on at home that may affect your child at school. Sometimes we may need supplies for class. If we do, I will send home a note. Graded papers: try to get them back by Friday. If this is not possible, let me know. Encourage your child to talk about his/her day. Find ways to get your child to reach out and think about others and serve others. I can help with ideas !
