What Can AIChE Do For You? David Gamliel 9/20/2016

About Me- Dave Gamliel Grew up in Western Massachusetts I have a B.S. in CHEG from UMass Amherst 4th year PhD student I Currently work at C2E2 with Prof. Valla and I was a GK12 Fellow My research focuses on the materials used to turn biomass into fuel

My Experience with AIChE I have been an AIChE member since 2007 Undergrad Positions: Freshman Class Representative Activity chair Treasurer Grad Positions: ChemE Car Advisor (2015-2016) YPC Northeast Regional Representative

My Story: How I got Involved As a 3rd week freshman, I attended an AIChE meeting much like this They had an open call for board positions, and two of my friends and I signed up They gave us ‘positions’, but we were happy to be involved

My Story: Undergrad Years My sophomore year, I was ‘elected’ to activities chair We went to the AIChE national conference in Minneapolis, MN Junior – senior year I was elected treasurer

Spotlight: National Conferences Every November, AIChE holds a national meeting (Sunday – Friday) Chemical engineers from all over the world get together to give presentations and network A student conference is held on the Saturday - Sunday

Spotlight: National Conferences Very Fun, rewarding and informative At night, all the conference rooms turn into university ‘hospitality suites’ Other highlights include: Poster sessions Topical Presentations Career Fair YPC Networking event Stanford ’14 ^^

My Story: Undergrad AIChE Senior year, we hosted two major events: New England Regional Conference CHEG Formal Banquet

Spotlight: Regional Conferences Every spring, each regional AIChE section hosts a student conference at a local University Popular events at regional conferences include: Paper presentations Poster Competition ChemE jeopardy Networking Social ChemE Car Competition https://che.umass.edu/news/umass-hosts-northeast-aiche-conference

Spotlight: ChemE Car 2014 National Video Chemically powered AIChE's  annual Chem-E-Car Competition engages college students in designing and constructing a car powered by a chemical energy source, that will safely carry a specified load over a given distance and stop. Chemically powered Travel an assigned length and stop With an assigned load Do This Safely!! 2014 National Video

My Story: The Later Years In the grad school years, my AIChE relationship turned more professional: I have given 4 national conference presentations I have presented 2 national conference posters I get to catch up with colleagues, former professors and friends! I am currently the Northeast regional representative to the Young Professionals’ Committee I attend conference calls and meetings I support local AIChE chapters with advertising and attendance

My Story: The Unwritten Part There are also many opportunities for professional engineers AIChE provides a professional network of chemical engineers Get CHEnected is AIChE’s official magazine There are also webinars and even a published journal There is an annual career fair, along with an online job posting site There are other professional benefits, such as health insurance

Why you Should Get Involved It is fun! It will build your project and time management skills This is great for resumes and interviews You will apply your CHEG knowledge into something real and tangible NETWORKING!!! You help increases awareness of the chemical engineering discipline among the public, industry leaders, educators, and other students. This can help you get a job

How You Can get Involved in AIChE Become a national member, it’s free for undergrads! Go to the meetings Go to the regional conference Join Chem-E car! Be an officer on the E-Board Get involved in research Some professors send undergrads to national conference

Checkout It’s a social network of Chemical Engineers all over the world Get connected, ask questions and network with other engineers!

My Takeaways Definitely Definitely get involved Overcome the activation barrier I got a lot more out of it than what I put in Don’t let ‘I’m too busy’ be an excuse Go to the regional conference, get to the national conference if you can!

Important Dates Sept 27 – TODAY! November 13-18, 2016 – National AIChE (San Francisco) March 24-26 – Regional AIChE Conference (WPI)
