Stem-changing verbs in the preterite tense The most important things to remember about stem-changing verbs in the Preterite (Past) Tense are that: -AR and -ER verbs that stem change in the present tense DO NOT stem change in the preterite tense! -IR verbs that stem-change in the present tense DO stem-change in the preterite tense….But, ONLY in the 3rd person singular (él, ella, Usted) and 3rd person plural (ellos, ellas, Ustedes) forms. There are only 2 types of stem changes in the preterite… (e:i) or (o:u)!

In the Past Tense these verbs are called "Slipper Verbs" instead of “boot verbs” because they only change in the "sole" of the boot & ONLY for -IR stem-changing verbs. Yo Nosotros/Nosotras Tú Él, Ella, Ud. Ellos, Ellas, Uds.

Almorzar – to have lunch Present tense: Preterite (past) tense: Almorzar (o:ue) Almorzar *NOT a slipper verb! almorcé almorzamos almuerzo almorzamos almorzaste almuerzas almorzó almorzaron almuerza almuerzan

Dormir – to sleep Present tense: Preterite (past) tense: Dormir (o:ue) Dormir (o:ue) dormí dormimos duermo dormimos dormiste duermes duerme duermen durmió durmieron
