Becoming a PAES expert

„Performance- and Appearance- Enhancing Substances (PAES) Definition „Performance- and Appearance- Enhancing Substances (PAES) refer to those substances that are used to build muscles, lose weight and generally enhance the athletic performance.“

Definition There are 2 kinds of PAES: CONTROLLED substances are monitored by the government and/or a sport governing body such as the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) because they can cause harm. It is not possible to obtain those substances in a legal way Examples: EPO, anabolic steroids, growth hormones NOT CONTROLLED substances are not monitored and legally available for everyone Examples: pain killers (e.g. aspirin) dietary supplements as protein shakes, creatine, vitamins and minerals

Sources of information Where do you look or ask for inormation about exercising and training methods in order to enhance your workout or to facilitate goal achievement? Collect your ideas 7,3% 23,3% 14,3% Internet advertisement & online stores Internet communities Friends & peers Coaches & Personal Trainers Doctors & Health Professionals etc. 10,2% 19,4% 25,6%

Content 2 Blocks Session 1: Friends & Peers Session 2: The Internet Role Play Discussion & Development of Evaluation Criteria Summary Session 2: The Internet Summary of the last session Development of Evaluation Criteria Transferability of „our Criteria“ Conclusion & Take Home Message First/ second session instead

Role Play - Preparation You will be divided into two equally large groups Group 1 will collect arguments for the use of PAES Group 2 will collect arguments against the use of PAES

Role Play – The Situation Imagine 3 young gym users sitting in the common/bar area of the gym. Two of them just tried a new substance that helped them to get a lot further achieving their exercising goals. Now they try to convince their friend to use this substance as well. Play the situation using the pro arguments you just collected (Group 1)! After recommending their wonder-substance, the friends are leaving the room. Now other gym users sitting around and listening the conversation come up to prevent the young guy using this substance. Members of Group 2 present their collected con arguments playing the other gym users!

Is a friend a reliable source? Which advantages could it have to consider a friend‘s opinion? Which disadvantages could it have for my decision if I take PAES or not? Collect pros and cons in the group! Make a list of criteria that are individually important FOR YOU! Use sheet “Should I trust my friend?”

Summary To ask friends and peers can have advantages as well as disadvantages: You might share some features and goals regarding your appearance and performance. On the other hand there might be a lack of professional knowledge, etc… BUT... ... Everybody is an individual! What is suitable for your friend does not have to be suitable for you as well. Thus: Evaluate friend‘s arguments critically and do not let it be the only source to consider for information!
