Determining the Role of Science and Technology in Agricultural Production Reminder: student learning activities are at the end of this power point.

Next Generation Science/Common Core Standards Addressed! RST.6‐8.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts. (MS-LS1-3) RI.6.8 Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not. (MS-LS1-3) SL.8.5 Integrate multimedia and visual displays into presentations to clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest. (MS-LS1-2)

Agriculture, Food and Natural Resource Standards addressed! BS.01. NCAE Standard: Assess factors that have influenced the evolution of biotechnology in agriculture (e.g., historical events, societal trends, ethical and legal implications, etc.). BS.01.01. Investigate and explain the relationship between past, current and emerging applications of biotechnology in agriculture (e.g., major innovators, historical developments, potential applications of biotechnology, etc.). Sample Measurement: The following sample measurement strands are provided to guide the development of measurable activities (at different levels of proficiency) to assess students’ attainment of knowledge and skills related to the above performance indicator. The topic represented by each strand are not all-encompassing. BS.01.01.01.a. Research and summarize the evolution of biotechnology in agriculture.

Bell Work Student Learning Objectives 1. Describe science and technology 2. Identify and explain major areas of biological and physical science related to agriculture production. 3. Describe the role of technology in agriculture production

Determining the Role of Science and Technology in Agricultural Production Recognizing the Impact of Technology on Agriculture

Determining the Role of Science and Technology in Agricultural Production Lesson Determining the Role of Science and Technology in Agricultural Production

Determining the Role of Science and Technology in Agricultural Production Interest Approach If you were to compile a list of areas that are related to science what would they be? Complete a list containing ten areas and of those listed circle the ones that relate to agriculture.

Determining the Role of Science and Technology in Agricultural Production – Terms! Agriscience Environmental science Precision farming Animals science Forestry Radiation Aquaculture Generic engineering Remote sensing Biological science Research Horticulture Biotechnology Science Laser technology Botany Scientific method Mechanical technology Computer science Technology Earth science Zoology Pathology Entomology Physical science

What are Science and Technology? Science and Technology go together and are very important to agricultural production. A. Science: is the knowledge of the world around us based on general facts and laws.

What are Science and Technology? 1. Agriscience: The use of science in producing food, fiber, and shelter. 2. Agriscience involves the Scientific Method, which involves asking questions and seeking answers in an organized way. 3. Research: is the careful and diligent search for answers to problems. B. Technology: is the practical use of science

Steps in the Scientific Method Step 1: Identify the problem Step 2: Review related literature Step 3: Form a hypothesis, a predicted answer to the problem. Step 4: Design and conduct an experiment to test the hypothesis. Step 5: Collect Data Step 6: Form a conclusion or judgement based on the results of the experiment. Step 7: Write and/or present a research report.

How does Biological and Physical Science relate to Agriculture Production? What are the major areas of biological and physical science related to agriculture? A. The study of living things is called Biological Science or life science. 1. Botany is the study of plants. A. Horticulture is the science of growing plants for food, comfort, and beauty. B. Forestry is the science of growing and using forests.

How does Biological and Physical Science relate to Agriculture Production? 2. Zoology: The study of animals A. Entomology is a branch of zoology that deals with insects and related small animals. B. Animal Science is an area of biological science dealing with the production of animals. C. The science of water farming is Aquaculture.

How does Biological and Physical Science relate to Agriculture Production? 3. The science that involves ways to wisely use and protect the things around us is Environmental Science. 4. Plant and animal Pathology involve the study of diseases.

How does Biological and Physical Science relate to Agriculture Production? B. Physical Science is the study of non-living things around us. 1. The study of the environment in which plants and animals live is Earth Science.

What is the role of technology in agriculture production? III. New agriculture technologies have resulted in improved methods of producing food, fiber, and shelter. A. Biotechnology: Involves using biology to develop new products or processes. B. Genetic Engineering: A form of biotechnology that involves the changing of the genetic makeup of living organisms. C. The use of machines and equipment to do work is known as Mechanical Technology.

What is the role of technology in agriculture production? D. Precision Farming; Uses cropping practices that improve yields based on the needs of the land. E. Remote Sensing Technology: Gathers and records data from a great distance. F. Laser Technology: Involves the use of a device that produces an intense, narrow, beam of light known as coherent light

What is the role of technology in agriculture production? G. Radiation: A form of energy that travels as waves, is being applied to food processing and insect control. H. The use of computers to do mathematics and science problems is Computer Science.

Determining the Role of Science and Technology in Agricultural Production Summary: 1. What is science and technology 2. What are the major areas of biological and physical science and how are they related to agriculture production. 3. What is the role of technology in agriculture production.

Student Learning Activities The End! NEXT: Student Learning Activities

Student Learning Activities Sample tests are available in the Lesson Plan tab.

Here is a foldable that you can make with your students about the scientific method. You can also make one similar to this one with the vocabulary words for this lesson. Inside definition Outside word

You can watch a Myth Busters video with your students, and give them the work sheet that is on the following slide. The worksheet is meant to be filled out during the video about the scientific method used in the video.
