Sepsis Improvement Team Sepsis: The Power Hour! Sepsis Improvement Team

Objectives Describe the early symptoms of sepsis Recognize the necessity for early sepsis detection and treatment. Explain the course of care required for patients who are determined to have sepsis.

Sepsis Sepsis is a life threatening complication of an infection It may include: Inflammation Organ dysfunction and failure Death

Why Sepsis Over 800,000 patients will develop sepsis each year in the USA, over a quarter of them will die from sepsis. Sepsis is an incredibly expensive illness to treat since half of the patients who develop sepsis will require intensive care. It now is the most expensive condition for which people are hospitalized. Not only is it the 11th leading cause of death, but over a third of patients who survive sepsis are so debilitated that they require long-term care afterwards

Early Detection is Key Super SIRS Criteria Suspected Infection AND TWO OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING Temperature >38.3 or <36.0 C Systolic blood pressure <90mmHg Pulse >120 Respiratory rate >24 New unexplained altered mental status

Time is of the Essence Every hour delay in recognition and treatment Increases Mortality by 8%
