Plant cell chloroplasts nucleus cell wall cell membrane vacuole This slide can be used as a reference by the EAL learners. vacuole cytoplasm mitochondria

Animal cell cell membrane mitochondria nucleus cytoplasm This slide can be used as a reference by the EAL learners. cytoplasm

Compare and contrast the two cells Fill the words in the Venn diagram Plant cell Animal cell Display this slide and explain the task. chloroplasts vacuole cell wall nucleus cell membrane mitochondria cytoplasm

Plant cell Animal cell Print this slide on A3 paper for a small group or pair activity, and on A4 for individual completion.

nucleus cell membrane Print slides 6-11 as 6 per page handouts, cut out the labels and laminate for repeated use. Give a set to each EAL learner or to each group. Learners can also complete this activity individually and keep for further reference and revision. For this all the labels and pictures can be printed on paper and not laminated.

Answers: Compare and contrast the two cells Fill the words in the Venn diagram Plant cell Animal cell nucleus mitochondria cell membrane cytoplasm chloroplasts vacuole cell wall Display for the learners to check their answers. chloroplasts vacuole cell wall nucleus cell membrane mitochondria cytoplasm

Useful language Comparing: similarly to likewise also like just as just like similar to same as compare compare(d) to / with Contrasting: however nevertheless still although / even though but yet despite / in spite of in contrast to in comparison on the other hand Print out this slide and let EAL learners to translate the conjunctions they are not familiar with, so they can keep for further reference.

Comparing and contrasting Like the animal cell, the plant cell has a nucleus, a cell membrane, mitochondria and cytoplasm. However, the plant cell has more cell parts than the animal cell. The plant cell contains chloroplasts which help photosynthesis to happen, but the animal cell doesn’t have any chloroplasts. Also, in contrast to the animal cell, the plant cell has a cell wall and a vacuole. Print out this slide and let EAL learners to translate the conjunctions they are not familiar with, so they can keep for further reference.

Compare and contrast the two cells Plant cell Animal cell chloroplasts vacuole cell wall nucleus cell membrane cytoplasm Differentiated

Compare and contrast the two cells The plant ____ has a ________ and the _________ cell has a __________ . Both plant and animal cells have a ______, _________, __________ and __________, but the ________ cell doesn’t have _________, a _________ and a _____ ________ . Differentiated
