Prevention Use condoms when performing intercourse. Ask partner if he/she has any STDs and sexual history. Limit number of sexual partners. Avoid sex partners with sores on his/her genitals. Do not receive oral sex from someone that has a cold sore on or around his/her mouth. Do not have sex while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. Practice monogamy/ abstain from sex until one has a life-long partner. Practice abstinence.
