How is high school different than middle school?

Classes/Credits/Quality Points/GPA – Breaking down the lingo High School Set Up Block Schedule Semesters 4 classes per day 90 minutes each 8 classes per year Two equal halves of the school year Fall Semester and Spring Semester Classes/Credits/Quality Points/GPA – Breaking down the lingo Classes – The courses a student is enrolled in each semester. A student can take a minimum of 32 classes during their 4 years at Jay M. Robinson. Credits – Each class that a student passes with a 60 or higher earns that student a credit. High school credits in middle school are also counted as credits if the student passes the course. Students need 27 credits to graduate. Quality Points – Each class earns a credit, but each final average for the class goes on the transcript and earns a certain number of quality points. Quality points are averaged together to give students their GPA. GPA – Grade Point Average - the average obtained by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credits attempted. Colleges, universities, and scholarships rely heavily on this number for an estimation of a student’s academic achievement. Minimum GPA to apply to a public 4 year university in NC: 2.5

Attendance in High School Attendance is taken per class period in high school. Students who miss more than 13 days in a class period may not receive course credit for that class. In place of the grade, the student would receive an FF. 4 tardies, check-ins, or check-outs during a class period will count as an absence towards your total. Excused and unexcused days all count towards your absence total.

High School Promotion/Privileges Must earn minimum credits each year to be promoted 9th 10th: Must earn 6 credits to be considered a sophomore. Privileges Pass 3 out of 4 classes per semester to be able to have: Athletic eligibility Driving

What is a High School Transcript? It is your academic record for all 4 years of high school Includes: All classes taken and final grades GPA (Grade Point Average) Class Rank State test scores Why is it important? Who would need this?

Types of Classes Students Can Take? Honors Courses COURSE RIGOR: The level of rigor in these courses push students to use higher level thinking and reasoning skills and learn to make connections to the “bigger ideas/concepts.” Some additional work is required, such as an Honors Paper/Project. Students get an additional half of a quality point calculated in their GPA for taking Honors Level courses. This allows an opportunity to increase their GPA and be academically competitive with their classmates and enhance future academic opportunities. Honors Level Courses available to incoming 9th graders Honors Math II (If a student had Math I in 8th grade) Honors English I Honors World History Honors Civics/Economics (If taking AP World History as a 10th grade student) Honors Earth and Environmental Honors Biology (If a student had Earth and Environmental in 8th grade)

Advanced Placement Courses Advanced Placement (AP) classes are college-level classes taught at the high school.  You get credit on your high school transcript, as well as credit in college, as long as you make a Level 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Exam (credit is subject to each individual college/university). AP courses give students an additional 1.0 quality point averaged into their GPA. AP Level Courses are available in the following academic areas: English Math Science Social Studies Art/Music World Languages

Career and College Promise Courses Career and College Promise courses (CCP) are college-level classes taught primarily online for junior and senior students through Rowan Cabarrus Community College. Students must have a 3.0 GPA entering their Junior year to participate. You get credit on your high school transcript, as well as credit in college, as long as you make C or higher in the class. CCP courses give students an additional quality point averaged into their GPA. Career and College Promise classes are an additional consideration to be considered with Advanced Placement classes. Academy of ENgineering & Automation How would you like first dibs at certain colleges/training schools because of being in the academy? How would you like to do paid internships during the school day? What would it be like being a NAF academy student? Access to the newest machinery in the county for hands on learning. Less lecture; more team project based learning. More opportunities to go on field trips related to the academy. Preferential scheduling of all your classes.

Registration Timeline Counselors to Visit Concord Middle School – February 21st, 2017 Curriculum Night – February 27th, 2017 Counselors to Visit Winkler Middle School – March 2, 2017 Middle School Visit to JMRHS –March 7, 2017 Student requests are entered into Powerschool by March 7, 2016 during school tour. Students will receive schedules in early May.

Sample Freshman Schedule We try to balance a student’s schedule; however, sometimes it is not possible.

JMRHS Schedule Change Policy Students are able to choose courses with the assistance of the counselor to ensure that academic and cluster requirements are being met. Students do not get to choose when the class is scheduled or who they have as a teacher The summer change deadline is May 31st, 2017!!!! Once that deadline has passed, you CANNOT change your schedule for either semester. Students who would like to make a change after receiving their schedule in early May can do the schedule change form that will be on your high school schedule in May.
