Year 11and 12 Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS) Forest Lake State High School

When is the QCS test held? Last week in August year 12 Two days – Tuesday and Wednesday

What is involved? Tuesday morning: Writing task Tuesday afternoon: Multiple choice paper 1 Wednesday morning: Short response paper Wed afternoon: Multiple choice paper 2

Who has to do it? Anyone who wants an Overall Position at the end of school Those who want to go to university using the OP system Anyone wanting high level courses at university

What do each of the tests require? WRITING TASK: 550-650 words in response to stimulus provided on the day Based on a theme eg Gold any genre except poetry 2 hours available

Multiple choice paper 1 & 2 100 questions each covering all subject areas, skill sets 90 mins each

Short Response Paper all subject topics write answers work maths & science problems design things 2 hours

VERY! How hard is the QCS test? It needs to challenge the brightest students in the state. It is designed with some quite reasonable/easy questions and some very, very difficult questions. It takes practice to learn to be good at answering the questions.

Why does it matter? Every OP eligible student does the test and their results in each subject are scaled Each student in the subject has their results compared to the average for each class It matters VERY MUCH if someone is doing a slack job on the QCS test – all in the subject can suffer We work hard to ensure you prepare well and take it seriously

Skills gained in QCS Skills gained in QCS enable students to succeed in all subjects Skills learned in this test will help with all other assessment Skills learned will help each student in their future study

What we will be doing in this subject Practising the tests Learning the particular skills required in each test (in rotations throughout the year) Tracking student progress – students set goals and are expected to improve over the 18 months we work on this Reporting to parents on how seriously your child is working on QCS preparation

Report comment choices ‘Name’ is preparing thoroughly for QCS tests, by engaging well with all activities and preparing appropriately at home. OR ‘Name’ is preparing solidly for QCS tests but needs to practise more at home. OR ‘Name’ is not yet engaging appropriately in QCS preparation and needs to practise more at home; she/he should consider changing their pathway. OR ‘Name’ is working well on QCS test preparation but is struggling with the standard required; she/he should consider changing their pathway.

Reports based on comments from the 3 different teachers for QCS preparation Students: Need to work hard in QCS classes Need to keep all practice tests and notes in one book/folder – brought to every lesson Need to practise QCS skills at home using the resources set for homework by your teacher THIS IS A SUBJECT – it matters.
