Preparing Students for Generalist Practice The overarching mission of the East Tennessee State University Bachelor of Social Work Program is to prepare students with the competencies that reflect the core values and ethical obligations necessary for entry-level generalist practice in the social work profession.

Articulation Agreements Agreements have been established allowing students at many community colleges to easily transfer to ETSU’s social work program upon completion of an associate’s degree http://www.etsu.edu/articulation/agreements/ We have Articulation Agreements with the following Virginia schools: Virginia Highlands Community College Southwest Virginia Community College Mountain Empire Community College Wytheville Community College New River Valley Community College

BSW Curriculum Students engage in a variety of social work content including: introduction to social work, human behavior, ethics, diversity, research, policy, and practice, along with a field internship. Under the articulation agreements, students are able to transfer the introduction to social work course from a community college To see all program requirements, visit the University Catalog at http://catalog.etsu.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=19&poid=7 333&returnto=970 BSW Cohort Graduates Spring 2016

Social Work Elective Courses The BSW degree requires students take at least two social work elective courses. Our current elective offerings include: Crisis Intervention • Grief and Loss Social Work Practice in Healthcare Spirituality in Social Work Family Violence Alcohol and Substance Abuse Human Sexuality Self-care for Helping Professionals Child Welfare

Field Education All social work students complete a field experience. Field education provides the student with the opportunity to acquire hands on experience in an agency where the student utilizes the knowledge, skills and values taught in the classroom. BSW interns complete about 430 hours; 16 hours a week in the final two semesters of the program. Placements are established after both field instructor and student agree that the match is compatible. Locating an agency in the student’s own community is priority in the placement process

Next Steps After Graduation Graduates of our BSW program are eligible to apply to our Advanced Standing Master of Social Work Program Students are able to complete the degree in as little as one calendar year on-campus or in two years in an off-campus cohort http://www.etsu.edu/cas/socialwork/msw_program/

BSW Cohort Options The cohort design provides an opportunity to complete the major requirements of the BSW degree in a convenient off- campus setting. The timing and format of courses are ideal for busy students that may not be able to complete the degree in a traditional way. Students entering the two-year, distance education program can expect to receive the identical education as traditional students experience on the main campus with a sense community and support among peers.

BSW Cohort Model Two courses meet in the classroom each semester Selective courses offered online to meet the needs of busy students Consistent schedule each semester Full-time faculty member available at each off-campus site that teach and advise students at that location Full-time faculty members from the main campus teach at the off-campus sites as well
