Diabetes mellitus type 1 (DMT1) courses with increased Na+/H+ exchanger 1 (NHE1) isoform turnover (Increased NHE1 turnover). This phenomenon is unclear in placentas from diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) or gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Increased NHE1 activity reduces NHE1 protein abundance (Reduced NHE1 expression). A common observation is that NHE1 activity is increased in the human placenta (Increased NHE1 activity) from DMT1 or DMT2, but nothing is clear in GDM. Increased NHE1 expression and activity changes pHo and pHi generating a placental microenvironment that alters mother-to-foetus nutrients transport (Altered placental membrane transport) in DMT1, DMT2, and GDM (dotted area).
