“Introduction to Middle School” Tyee Middle School Home of the Thunderbirds Family University “Introduction to Middle School”

What does a day at Tyee look like? Students arrive to school between 8:00 am and 8:15 am School starts at 8:28 AM (this year) 7-period day: 7 different classes, with 7 different teachers, in 7 different classrooms every day Students are given 5 minutes between classes to go to their locker

What does a day at Tyee look like? Lunch lasts 30 minutes – 6th graders only. Students may stay in the Commons, go outside, play on the field, check-out equipment, go to the library, etc. School ends at 3:20, except Wednesdays (2:10) Tutorial is Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri from 3:20-3:50PM for all classes Extra-Curricular Activities: 3:55-4:40. Sports, clubs, etc. Must attend tutorial to participate in activities.

Middle School Course Requirements: College Preparatory Sequence Language Arts 3 years Math Science Social Studies PE 3 semesters, one per year Health 1 semester in 7th grade CTE (Career & Technical Education) 1 semester Performing/Visual Art 2 semesters

Required Classes All 6th grade students will automatically be scheduled into the following required courses: Honors 6th grade Language Arts – all year Honors 6th grade Social Studies – all year Math – IMT1 (6th grade) – all year Science – all year 6th grade Physical Education – one semester

WEB WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) is an orientation and transition program. Your student will be invited to a special orientation day in August to meet other 6th graders, tour the school, connect with 8th grade leaders and just have fun!

1st Quarter of 6th Grade Check Agenda: Assignments should be written in agenda for every class even if no homework is assigned Check Brightspace Check Aspen: Talk to your student about school, teachers, friends and grades Ask your student to go to tutorial with questions. They need to keep track of their own progress. Email teachers, but do not expect a meeting after every assignment with a poor grade Extracurricular activities: While it is important to engage your student in extra curricular activities such as sport, music, dance….You may want to cut down on the number of hours at least for the first quarter. They can always add more hours if they experience a smooth transition to middle school first quarter.

Goals for 6th Grade Students Enjoy School Learn about and use resources available to them Learn how to do school. Grades should be considered as a form of communication between teachers, students and parents. Students should learn to advocate for themselves. (Tutorial and email)

6th Grade Parent Tips Combination lock – available Walmart/Target; practice over summer Backpacks – not allowed in classes, need to be stored in lockers Zipper binders – are popular and help with organization Supply lists – comes home first week of school with each class syllabus Student handbook – front of Agenda, student & parents must read & sign

6th Grade Parent Tips Agenda – review regularly with student to ensure recording assignments After school tutorial – strong students use often and regularly Wednesday – early release day, no tutorial or after school activities Drop-off & pickup – arrive at least 15 minutes early to avoid traffic jam

6th Grade Parent Tips Health forms – see Health Services Department area of BSD website New BSD students – by first day of school Certificate of Immunization & Health forms Life threatening condition parent must schedule & meet with school nurse Current BSD students – by 8/22/16 to school nurse TDap & Varicella Immunization form Individual Health Plans with medications
