Notice: You must clear out your locker! All students must clean out their lockers by this Friday December 16. Students are to clean out lockers before or after school and not during lunch or class. Anything left in lockers after this Friday will be thrown out! New locker assignments will be made the week of 12/19 and unused lockers will be secured.

Public or Private? 1  The U.S. government requires 18-year-old males to register for the draft. 2  In 2013, the City of Chicago prohibited the sale of flavored tobacco products, including menthol-flavored cigarettes, within 500 feet of schools. 3  Noah is not allowed to drive after dark unless his parents are in the car. 4  The fast food restaurant where Aaliyah works does not allow employees to have face piercings on other than their ears. 5  The state of Illinois requires that students pass a test on the Constitution and proper use of the flag in order to graduate from high school. 6  Maya is in detention because of repeated violations of the no-cell- phones-in-class rule.

Public or Private? 7  The University of Illinois encourages students to publish their work online but does not allow pages on the university website to carry advertising. 8  The Boys and Girls Club where Isaiah hangs out after school bans swearing. 9  The U.S. Department of State funds projects to fight human trafficking around the world. 10  Antonio and his friends are angry because the convenience store across from their school only lets two students in at a time. 11  A new law in Illinois allows children with epilepsy to receive a medicine made with marijuana.

Read, Listen, and Respond Policy: In the past few years, at least six states have enacted laws restricting cellphone use while driving. What problems do you think these new policies are trying to address? Problem: People who are extremely overweight are more likely to have serious health problems. More children than ever before are being diagnosed with diseases, like diabetes, related to being overweight. What policies might a school district (which is a government agency) enact to address this problem?

Read, Listen, and Respond Problem: A school has a policy of leaving four minutes between classes, which many students feel is not enough time and results in many students being tardy. What is the problem? What can be done about the problem/policy? Sometimes policies can be controversial and thus viewed as a problem by some people. In other cases a policy just isn’t working (unintended consequences). Thus, policies can be part of the problem, and eliminating or revising the policy-rather than creating a new policy-may be the solution.
