Development of Common Law Henry II inherits the throne of England, and starts English Common Law. He used and expanded local customs into Laws then sent out judges to enforce them This standardized laws and punishments through out England. Henry also developed the idea of a Jury who decided which cases go to the Judge.

Magna Carta Henry’s son John was greedy and always fighting with his own nobles. They finally cornered John and forced him to sign the Magna Carta. Affirmed a long list of noble rights Right of Due Process (Habeas Corpus) King can’t raise taxes without the “Great Council’s” OK

Rise of Parliament The Great Council would become Parliament Contained 2 Houses: The House of Lords, and the House of Commons. The Hundred Years War forced the King to repeatedly go to Parliament for money. Parliament started forcing the King to meet demands before they would raise taxes for the war.

English Civil War Charles I tried to be an Absolute Monarch He clashed often with Parliament. Eventually causing a Civil War. Parliament’s forces were lead by Oliver Cromwell who defeated the King 2 years later Parliament tried and executed Charles I

Glorious Revolution Following Cromwell’s death, Parliament restored the Monarchy. James II made the same mistakes as his grandfather Charles and was pro-Catholic. Parliament invited his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange to takeover. When William arrived James fled to France. William took over with no bloodshed.

English Bill of Rights Before they were crowned William and Mary had to sign the Bill of Rights. It gave Parliament the “power of the purse” Stopped the King from suspending laws. Affirmed Habeas Corpus: no person can be arrested without being charged. Created a Limited Monarchy.
