Case Studies – Activity Jimicia, a 16-year-old female told a classmate she wanted to take 12 aspirins before school. She told the teacher that she could not tolerate rumors at school that she and another girl are sharing the same boyfriend. The teacher noticed she has not been engaging in class, and reports that she has always had difficulty expressing her feelings. In the interview, she is quiet, guarded, and initially quite reluctant to talk. On assessment, the student has a bottle of aspirin in her possession. Her mom made her move out last semester because she was pregnant. There has been no communication between the two in 3 months. She has been moving around to different locations at night, hasn’t been sleeping and is unable to discuss any reason for living. She reports that she was hospitalized last year and had her stomach pumped after she took a bottle of Tylenol and fifth of vodka.

Case Studies – Activity 2 Tonya is a 13-year-old girl who lives in Nashville. Her parents recently divorced, which forced her to move to a new school district. She hates the change, and hasn’t made any new friends. Her sister Tiffany, her 'only' friend, has just moved away to college, which has made her feel even worse. She is having trouble sleeping, her grades are falling, and she is crying almost everyday. She tried to tell her dad and new stepmom that she was feeling terrible, but they said that things would get better if she would just give it some time. She hasn’t talked to her parents again, because they don’t understand and are fighting all the time over financial stress. She gave her sister her birthstone ring, and said she wouldn't need it anymore. The bus driver noticed cuts on her wrists and arms. When the bus driver asked about them, she said, “I wish they were deeper.” When asked by the counselor, she stated that she has razors hidden under her bed, and she states that when she goes home, “I know what I’m going to do.”

Case Studies – Activity 3 David is a 10 year old student. He has been constantly getting into trouble, being sent to the office. He has had after school detention and several out of school suspensions. His mother told him if he gets in trouble one more time he is “out of here” and going to a group home. He has a difficult time interacting with his classmates. He has gotten into a fight and been sent to the principal's office. He immediately started to say, “I don’t want to live anymore. I wish I was dead. I hate myself and you too.” On assessment, David refused to talk to the counselor and said, “I don’t have the problem, you do!”
