The presentation briefly describe The Ballad Epic Sonnet Elegy Lyric Ode

Ballad “Strange fits of passion have I know ballads are long poems (songs) Depicting usually a love story The earliest form in English literature Ballads are remarkable for their simplicity, singing tone and rhythm Wordsworth “Lyrical Ballads” “Strange fits of passion have I know And I will dare to tell, But in the Lover’s ear alone, What once to me befell.”

Epic It has close relationship with Ballad Similar in theme but greater in length It commands a greater dignity. Epic narrates the stories of heroes of national eminence Homer’s epic poem “The Iliad” “And the shivers took hold of Hector when he saw him, and he could no longer stand his ground there, but left the gates behind, and fled, frightened, and Peleus' son went after him in the confidence of his quick feet.”

Elegy W.H. Auden’s “In Memory of W.B. Yeats” A poetic form that praises or remembers someone who died Began in Ancient Greece Depicts three stages of loss: Grief and sorrow Praise Comfort Excerpt from an Elegy: W.H. Auden’s “In Memory of W.B. Yeats” “He disappeared in the dead of winter: The brooks were frozen, the airports almost deserted, And snow disfigured the public statues; The mercury sank in the mouth of the dying day. What instruments we have agree The day of his death was a dark cold day.”

Sonnet It is a short poem of fourteen lines Usually a Sonnet is recited to musical accompaniment Has a close relation with lyric Though it lacks in spontaneity and simplicity This form was invented by the Italian in 13th century But it as Henry Howard and, sir Thomas Wyatt who brought sonnet to English poetry in a new style Sonnet is based on the personal feelings, joys and sorrows of a poet Milton’s “On His Blindness” is a beautiful example o this regard.

Poetry Forms Lyric Short poetic form that is an expression of personal emotion lyrical poetry is closely concerned with music To Dianeme and To Anthea Who May Command Him Anything are the beautiful examples

Poetry Forms ode It is a form of lyrics has a direct address of the poet, either to his beloved or objects etc. Shelley’s “Ode to the West Wind” and Keats “Ode on a Grecian Urn” are the examples of Ode
