Georgie, Paris, Natasha and Eleanor The Incarnation Georgie, Paris, Natasha and Eleanor
What is the meaning of the word, 'incarnation' ? An incarnate is a person who embodies in the flesh of a deity (god). This is like when Jesus came to Earth as a human, even though he is son of God, and an embodiment of Him. Did you know? The word incarnation does not originate from the original text of the Bible (i.e. it is not a biblical term first seen in the bible). It is in fact derived from the Latin in (in) and caro (flesh), meaning literally 'in flesh'.
What are Christian beliefs about the incarnation? A Christian believes that the second part of the Trinity- Jesus- is flesh. He was sent to Earth by God as man, to live amongst the people. He was born to the Virgin Mary, a miracle. Jesus became a 'super-being' who would redeem the human race by sacrificing himself. ‘The Word [God] became flesh and dwelt among us’ (John 1:14)
Why is the incarnation important? The incarnation showed that God wanted to be involved in life on Earth, by sending his only son. The incarnation makes it possible for our sins to be redeemed, Jesus sacrificed himself for the human race. The incarnation shows Gods power and divinity, he is present and able to perform miracles. The incarnation shows God had faith in humanity, enough for him to trust them with his son, and allow them to be saved by his sacrifice.
Luke 1.26-35 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Nativity. The incarnation is described in the nativity. Mary, a virgin, received a message from God, telling her she would be the mother of His son. She was scared but accepted this. She travelled to Bethlehem with her husband, Joseph, where her son was born in a stable. They called him Jesus as God ordered. He grew up to perform great miracles, as the son of God.
