What is a Certification, Licensure, or Credential? By the Numbers – 2016-2017 Update Accountability Measures Resources? Why Should Teachers Obtain a Certification? How to Request Certification Vouchers and Document Results

Certifications, Credentials, Licensures Licenses Awarded by a governmental agency Gives legal authority to work in an occupation Requires meeting a predetermined criteria such as having a degree and or passing a state-administered exam

Certifications, Credentials, Licensures Awarded by a professional organization or other nongovernmental body Is not legally required in order to work in an occupation Requires demonstrating competency to do a specific job, often through an examination process

Certifications, Credentials, Licensures Process by which qualified agent grants formal recognition to and records such status of entities (individuals, organizations, processes, services, or products) meeting pre-determined and standardized criteria. Necessary for some industry positions Increases salary gains by individuals with credentials.

Certifications and Special Populations By law*, any student, such as those with disabilities or who are English Language Learners cannot and should not be denied access to Career and Technical Education programs Students are not required to take a certification exam to participate in or to pass a CTE course *Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990

Campus and District Accountability Beginning in 2017, the percentage of students who earn an industry certification will be part of campus and district accountability ratings under Domain IV

Accountability

Teacher Preparation Professional Development Teachers trained (certified) in at least one credential. Industry certification with related training expands a teacher’s content background in the skill set areas and job roles for which they train students. Industry certification enables teachers to explain the requirements of specific jobs in related career pathways as well as to put into perspective for their students the relative “market value” of industry certifications as well as other credentials.

Find the form for requesting vouchers here: Process and Timeline Due to procurement and purchasing restrictions, requests for vouchers and assessments should be made at least 45 days prior to the administration of the exam. Find the form for requesting vouchers here: http://www.hisdcareerreadiness.org/prepare/certifications A student roster reflecting the student’s name and ID number is required to complete the online request form.

Requesting Vouchers Students must be assigned to a course that is aligned to the certification exam requested. If the vouchers are not used within the 15 days, they may be recovered and made available for use by other CTE teachers. Certification results should be entered into Chancery within five business days after the receipt of the student results.
