Welcome! Third Thursdays with the ICTR is a new monthly lecture series. Speakers will share research related news and showcase a resource or service that can aid clinical research investigators and study team members. March 16th – Tony Keyes will present on the ICTR’s ClinicalTrials.gov Program.

Background The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) of NIH, which supports the ICTR Clinical Research Units (CRUs) through its CTSA program, announced in 2015 that direct support of CRUs will not be allowed for any new or re-competing CTSA awards. The CTSA Awards will not cover the cost of most CRU services, the expectation is the home NIH Institute will pay for these services.

Background Our CRUs have been a major source of support for investigators throughout Johns Hopkins and this change in policy will have a significant impact on our future ICTR operations. This NCATS policy has already been implemented for the ~30 CTSA "Hubs" that received a new award over the past two years and we have been informed that the policy will remain in effect for our next CTSA competing renewal (expected in May of 2018).

Service Center Model A service center is an organizational unit which provides a specific set of services or products to users principally with in the hosting academic institution. Service centers are subject to federal regulations which determine how much can be charged for the services or products they provide. Beginning May, 2018 our CRUs will begin to operate using a service center model. As of that date, the CRUs will begin charging for clinical services provided in the CRUs. The expectation is that the NIH Institute or other sponsor funding an investigator’s research will fund services provided by the CRU. Investigators should include these costs in budgets for grant proposals.
