What Are We Doing Today? Today we will be talking about why you should learn about all of the careers that are around today We will be discussing why it is important to learn about different careers We will also be taking a small quiz, where you need to write about how you handle different challenges that are thrown at you through out your life

The Importance of Careers Chapter 1

What is work? Work is defined as an activity done to produce or accomplish something People work to gain something in return

Differences between Careers and jobs A career is a series of related skills and experiences that are usually in the same or related fields. These skills and experiences will help you to advance in a chosen field of work Think of the career that you wrote about yesterday, think of some skills and experiences that will help you to advance in this career

Planner Monday- career ladder, how work provides, income, identity Tuesday- how work provides lifestyle, satisfaction, keeps the economy strong Wednesday- about how work requires knowledge and skills. Homework- Prepare interview questions for your parents regarding the types of jobs they held during their lifetime. Questions can cover what they liked most and least, what skills they used, where they happy about their jobs. Due Friday Thursday- review different types of transferable skills that they have learned, and will be learning this year in school, and how they can apply them to a future career. Friday- Finish Transferable Skills Essay

Career Ladder A career ladder shows a sequence of work in a career field from entry to advanced levels Each step in your career may require that you learn new and more complex information and skills Reaching your final career objective may take many years and require considerable education and training Careers require that many skills be learned to progress in a chosen area. No matter what career direction you choose advancing will depend on learning more complex information and skills

Work Provides Incomes (find clip about making money) The purpose of work is to produce or accomplish something. What could that something be? Examples: 1. Sense of obligation 2. Commitment to a goal 3. Or a sense of pride What do you think is the biggest reason why people work?

Income What is income? Lets talk about the basic reasons for why income is important: 1. Needs 2. Wants

Needs 1. Needs- are the basics you must have in order to live. A. Car B. A place to live C. Money D. Food E. Money for school F. Support your family 2. Satisfying greater needs usually requires income from a higher-paying job

Wants In addition to your needs, you also have wants. Wants go beyond actual needs Wants include items items you would like to have, but do not need to survive. For example- 1. while you may need a car, you may want a new sports car 2. While you may need a place to live, you may want a big apartment 3. You may need clothes, but you want new stylish clothes 4. You may need to take a short trip, but you want to go on a fun vacations Affording your needs and wants requires earning a living by working

Lifestyle Your work will also affect the people that you meet and the time that you spend with your family and friends Some jobs require working nights and weekends, others may involve overtime hours or out-of town travel Income is a big factor that influences lifestyle How you balance your work and non-work hours depends on your lifestyle decisions

Work Provides Satisfaction We work to gain satisfaction Working a job well help you build self-esteem, and when you have self-esteem you are confident about yourself Work comes with different types of satisfaction including: 1. When you complete a job and do it well, you feel good about yourself 2. Being around other people 3. Feeling useful

Work Provides Satisfaction Many people judge their success in terms of satisfaction rather than income They do not feel that they have to be wealthy to be successful in life Many famous people in history have dedicated their lives to helping society without expecting financial rewards

Work Keeps the Economy Strong Economy- Is a way of producing, distributing, and consuming goods and services When people go to work, they make products and perform services that others buy They in turn earn money that allows them to buy things that they both need and want. All of this buying and selling go back into the economy

These key skills are reading, writing, speaking, listening, math, science, and basic computer skills Thinking Skills- Allows you to develop ideas and solve problems. The key skills are thinking creatively, visualizing ideas, making decisions, thinking critically Personal Qualities- These shape the way you work and the kind of worker you are. The key qualities are positive attitude, self-esteem, sociability, flexibility, integrity, responsibility, leadership, and a team focus

Developing Transferable Skills Transferable Skills- Skills used in one career that can be used in another Examples : Skills learned as a store clerk working with money are the same skills needs by a teller in a bank Academic and thinking skills are considered transferable skills

Developing Transferable Skills Having transferable skills are important to your future career success Whenever you leave a job, think about which of your skills will carry over to a new position Most people will underestimate their skills. Be sure to take the time to identify all your skills in your search for a rewarding careers
