HSE’s Strategic focus Continue to focus on serious risk Place resources in those areas most deserving of our attention – serious incidents, high hazard industries and dutyholders who are not effectively managing serious risk Assist and work with others to promote and encourage ownership of the new Strategy – Helping GB work well Our priorities have not changed Engaging in promoting and developing the strategy with your help

Major incidents Guess the major incident.

The wider reality in Wales Health and Safety Statistics 2014/15 9 work-related deaths 2,640 non-fatal injuries per 100,000 workers (2nd highest in UK nations/regions) 1.3 million working days lost Costing employers £500 million 64,000 affected by work-related ill health – 4.5% of the working population With 27,000 new cases in 2014/15

Poorly maintained or misused ladders Work at Height Inadequate machinery guarding Badly organised workplace transport Exposure to asbestos fibres Exposure to toxic paints Creating clouds of silica dust HAVs Unhygienic welfare facilities

Our regulatory work in Wales in 2015/16 Investigations 641 injuries and concerns investigated 29 fatal investigations Notices 506 INs, 171 PNs, 2 ELCI 195 Health, 502 Safety, 28 Welfare Prosecutions 43 completed, 45 approved, 20 approved and completed in year Proactive interventions 1083 Enforcement undertaken at 47% of visits 24 Inspectors, 5 Visiting officers 27 fatal investigations

Helping GB work well Six themes Acting together: Promoting broader ownership of health and safety in Great Britain Tackling ill health: Highlighting and tackling the costs of work-related ill health Managing risk well: Simplifying risk management and helping business to grow Supporting small employers: Giving SMEs simple advice so they know what they have to do Keeping pace with change: Anticipating and tackling new health and safety challenges Sharing our success: Promoting the benefits of Great Britain’s world-class health and safety system www.hse.gov.uk/strategy/index.htm The title encompassing good health and safety as being good for business. It works in concert with the Government’s growth agenda and not against it. It is not just a strategy for the health and safety system, but a strategy that you can help your clients apply in their businesses. Acting together – Directors, managers and workers all working Tackling ill health – Bring focus to serious risks to health some over which are pervasive over a long time period Managing risk well -

Tackling ill-health

Managing risk well Myth busters panel Sensible and proportionate risk management integral to business delivery Supports growth, innovation and protects people. - nets in construction Positive outcomes can include reduced sickness absence, lower costs and a good reputation. Compelling business case for the benefits a good health and safety culture can bring. Sharing examples of good practice to achieve common understanding of what proportionate health and safety looks like. Health and safety professionals have an important role to play. Helping businesses of all sizes get it right in an efficient and effective way will build trust and improve standards.

Supporting small employers Pembrokeshire Estates Engagement Project Partnership between IOSH West Wales, MHPA, Healthy Working Wales, Pembrokeshire County Council Corporate Safety Unit, The Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) West Wales, Pembrokeshire County Council Health and Safety Enforcement Team and HSE Raise awareness and deliver advice, help, guidance and free training on risks specific to SME’s located at nine industrial estates within the South Pembrokeshire area Enable business of all sizes to discuss and share solutions to key risks, tackling the fear of health and safety, developing economic growth and providing a support legacy Covered over 200 businesses in 9 industrial estates within a 10 mile radius 1340 local employees covered Benefits – Opportunity over a period of time to access assistance Free training on SME defined topics Sharing of best practice – large and small businesses Provision of further avenues of support Benefits to the partners that took part Repeatable template for others to follow

Keeping pace with change – waste and recycling New and novel waste treatment and recycling processing technologies being developed. Increasing amounts of innovation e.g. landfill mining Increasingly complex and diverse sector with many interfaces, participants and cultures, new entrants to sector, sub-contractors and existing companies diversifying, may lack experience and skills Increased automation, robotics and computer control Lack of knowledge about OSH effects of new materials now being recycled (previously landfilled), potential for increased exposures and risk of long-latency hazards Sector is very vulnerable to global demand, prices and incentives/ government/EU policy

Sharing our success What would be the best success to share?

Acting together to broaden ownership The challenge of broadening ownership of health and safety risk Engaging with others Being honest about what can deliver and what you need help with Sharing good practice which delivers effective, proportionate risk management Doing what you should do, not just what you have been asked to do.

Questions What forums can we use or set up to achieve progress? What can you do? How are you going to achieve it?
