Licking Heights Mission… In partnership with students, family, and community, Licking Heights Local School District ensures that all students acquire skills, knowledge, and expertise to succeed as effective citizens and workers in the 21st century.

Intervention Time/Enrichment Toward the end of the day, we will take 20-25 minutes to work with students individually or in groups based on data and assessments. No new material will be introduced at this time, this is an enrichment to support individual student needs and learning goals.

Working towards our mission… Following research-based standards (Common Core and Ohio’s Learning Standards) Setting clear learning targets Using common assessments Asking and posting essential questions per learning unit and lesson (For example, “How can you count number 5?”) Working together with families to support positive learning goals ›

Using Technology in the classroom… We will use a variety of technology to increase engagement and prepare for the future. Smartboards Student computers Media computer lab

Why do we teach in this way? To increase transfer of learning To deepen understanding To prepare for college and career To create independent and critical thinkers To foster problem solving To create and develop collaboration with peers

Reading: Journeys Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys is a  multisensory, structured language program, that provides research-based materials and strategies essential to a comprehensive reading, spelling, and handwriting program. It is the most widely used reading program in the country. This program fosters student knowledge and learning of Kindergarten sight words. Students need to be able to identify these words by the end of Kindergarten. Sight Word Books

Go Math! Go Math is an authentic Houghton Mifflin Harcourt® curriculum—with problem solving as the center of math learning and concepts taught with a concrete–pictorial–abstract learning progression through real-world, hands-on experiences. Supports the goals of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Is research-based and focuses on classroom learning, discussion, and practice Balances conceptual understanding, visual learning, and problem solving Is also one of the most commonly used math programs in the country.

Guided Reading Guided reading is “small-group reading instruction designed to provide differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency”. The small group model allows children to be taught in a way that is intended to be more focused on their specific needs, accelerating their progress. Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) is an extensive and proven program that we will use to support this instruction during guiding reading. Baggy books will be sent home to reinforce reading strategies taught in small group.

KRA (Kindergarten Readiness Assessment) Ohio’s Early Childhood Comprehensive Assessment System is designed to measure at kindergarten entrance childrens’ skills and abilities in relation to the end of pre-kindergarten standards. (Things they should be able to do). The KRA is aligned to the essential areas of school readiness and is composed of three item types: selected response, performance task, and observational rubric in math and reading. Will start guided reading after KRA is complete
