Aim: How do we differentiate between the inner and outer planets? Do Now: Regents Worksheet Homework: Planet Facebook

Did Yakko, Wakko, and Dot name the order of the planets correctly? Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Mercury Venus Earth Mars My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos

How can an object be considered a planet? Planets – bodies that are partly solid or gaseous that orbit around the sun and are seen by reflected sunlight Satellite – solid bodies that orbits planets (moons)

How do we describe the Inner Planets? Inner Planets The Planets are separated into two groups, the Inner and Outer planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, are the closest planets to the sun. These four planets are small and mostly solid with a rocky composition. These planets are very dense. This group of planets is known as the Terrestrial Planets. Inner planets are called Terrestrial Planets Small size Rocky composition (mostly solid) Closer to the sun short period of revolution Slow Rotation (longer day)

How do we describe the Outer Planets? Outer Planets The four outer planets are known as the Jovian Planets. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are the farthest planets to the sun. These four planets are giants and composed of gas. These planets are less dense. Gas composition (mostly hydrogen and helium) Large size – Giants Farthest from the sun (long period of revolution) Fast Rotation Outer planets are called Jovian Planets

How do we interpret the Solar System Data Chart? Asteroid Belt Venus – only planet that rotates from East to West - rate of rotation is slower than rate of revolution (its day is longer than its year) Jupiter– Largest Planet, strong gravitational pull Saturn – Least dense planet – float on water Asteroid belt- located between Mars & Jupiter - separates the Terrestrial and Jovian planets (~503 million km)

Summary Activity Terrestrial Planets Jovian Planets Large Diameter Write the statements that describe the differences between the Terrestrial and Jovian Planets in the outer circles. Write the statements that describe the similarities in the inner circle. Terrestrial Planets Jovian Planets Large Diameter Small Diameter Rotate on an axis Long Period of Revolution Short Period of Revolution Orbits around the sun Gaseous Composition Rocky Composition More Dense Less Dense

Extra Questions From the diagram, Name only the terrestrial planets. From the diagram, Name the planet with the lowest density. How many times larger is the diameter of Sun than the diameter of Jupiter? 1,392,000 = 142, 984 9.5 to 11.5
