Goal Update How are you doing on your goal? What are you doing on a daily or weekly basis to achieve your goal? Are you on pace to achieve your goal?

Communicable Diseases EWHS Health

Communicable OR Non-Communicable Envelopes…. Get in groups of 3-4 When I say go, take out the cards and place the 2 larger cards in front of you. (Communicable & Non-Communicable) Place the smaller cards (Disease) into the correct category. Call me over when you are done.

Non COMMUNICABLE COMMUNICABLE ALS – Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Tuberculosis Arthritis Hepatitis Diabetes Flu Cancer CVD – Cardio-Vascular Disease Strep Throat MS Mononucleosis (Mono) Polio Mad Cow - Bovine spongiform encephalopathy

Types of Communicable Diseases Cold and flu Tuberculosis (affects lungs) Strep Throat Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver)A, B & C Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) Meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain) Polio (impacts the CNS causes paralysis) Measles (cold, fever, rash) Mono (fatigue, swollen glands)

Top Killers…..

Communicable Diseases: www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-3Ju0EX3gQ 3 minutes Caused by direct or indirect spread of pathogens from one person to another. They enter and multiply within the human body.

Pathogens Bacteria (single cell microorganism) They enter the body and multiply rapidly through cell division. Can live anywhere – air, soil, water – some produce toxins. Viruses (genetic material coated by protein) Are not living cells but attach themselves to living cells (hosts) and injects its genetic material into that cell, makes copies and spreads to other cells https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rpj0emEGShQ (3 minute animation of the flu)

Fungi (plant like organisms) Ring worm or athletes foot. They prefer dark, damp environments and invade deep tissue like hair, nails and skin.

How Communicable Diseases Spread? DIRECT CONTACT With People or animals INDIRECT CONTACT Contaminated objects – table, door handles, eating utensils, tooth brush, needles, etc. Vectors (flies, mosquitoes & ticks) – transfers pathogens from person to person Water & Food

Prevention Wash hands Strong Immune System Contact with people, etc. Reduce Stress….. Immunizations Use Food Handling Tips Don’t Share (utensils, make up, combs etc)

The Bodies Ways of Preventing Communicable Diseases Physical barriers (skin, mucus, cilia etc) Chemical barriers (enzymes in saliva and gastric juices) Immune System Response Inflammatory Response Antigen – substance that is capable of triggering an immune response

16 Communicable Disease Questions Answer in your Journal (pages 622-625) 1. Define pathogens 2. What is a Communicable disease? 3. What are the 5 types of pathogen’s and give 3 examples. 4. Explain the differences between a virus and bacteria. 5. Name 3 ways communicable diseases are transmitted. 6. How can you prevent getting a communicable disease? 7. Identify and explain 3 prevention strategies 8. Define: (pg. 627-634) a. inflammatory response, b. phagocyte c. antigen d. immunity e. lymphocyte f. Killer T cells g. antibody

Communicable Disease (pg. 627-634) 9. List 5 parts of physical/chemical barriers. 10. List 8 stages of immune response. 11. How many viruses cause the common cold? 12. Explain memory lymphocytes. 13. Lymphatic system includes your ____________, ____________, and ___________________. 14. If a lymph node is swollen when should you call the doctor? 15.Where are 3 of the 6 places your lymphocytes concentrated? 16. How to care for your immune system? (3 ways)

Extra Credit: Disease Interview Due October 31/Nov 1 Interview someone who suffers or has suffered from a non-communicable disease. (family, friend etc) Over phone, in person via email. Develop 10 thought provoking questions and format Q & A’s into magazine format.
