A little background NSW Department of Education school Year 9 to 12 students from government and non- government schools We offer languages and ESL only We follow the syllabuses from the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) Distance education only

110 courses 400+ schools 2200+ students Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Modern Greek, Russian, Portuguese and Spanish 110 courses

What is distance education? Students: remain in their own (home) school replace one subject in their home school with an NSL course complete their NSL work in their home school, supported by their home school supervisor.

How are students taught? Blended learning Interactive online activities, videos and listening exercises Phone lessons and video links Study days and face-to-face lesson days Individual study/catch-up days

Also, it’s great to study a language that is not offered at my school.”

Communication The official relationship is between NSW School of Languages and the home school: Home school enrols the student We communicate with the home school supervisor, e.g. lesson notifications, assessment information, lateness of work Reports go to your child’s school which then passes on a copy to you.

Communication with students The teacher contacts students by phone lessons to the home school, email, through Moodle, SMS and sometimes video-conference. Moodle has information on: lesson notes course schedule lesson days assessments and exam notifications

Study and face-to-face days Usually held once per term at NSW School of Languages Students are expected to attend Usually 9.30am to 2.30pm Activities during the day may include: exam preparation, revision cultural activities group language activities

What can you do? Provide a computer with internet access and with the relevant language Ask your child to show you the Moodle site Download a copy of the course schedule Ask your child regularly how they are managing – do they have access to a quiet room, a school phone for phone lessons?

What can you do? Put the NSL lesson days and assessment task dates into the family calendar or on the fridge Check that your son or daughter is keeping up with his/her work Contact your child’s teacher for regular updates Check NSW School of Languages’ website regularly for updates Like us on Facebook for news on school activities

Your support Tell us if there is a change in your child’s health or behaviour If your doctor has provided you with a health management plan, please provide a copy to both your home school and to us Ensure the home school notifies NSW School of Languages in September whether or not your child will be continuing in Term 4 Contact us if you have a concern.
