1. Background Info: Why-SDGs ● The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development builds on the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were adopted in 2000 and guided development action for the last 15 years (2000-2015). The MDGs have proven that global goals can lift millions out of poverty ● Countries agreed in 2012 at Rio+20, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, to establish an open working group to develop a set of sustainable development goals for 2016-2030. Thus, the SDGs are the result of a three–year–long (2012-2015) transparent, participatory process inclusive of all stakeholders and people’s voices eplanation

1. Background Info: What-SDGs ● The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development contains 17 goals and 169 targets ● The new goals are part of an ambitious, bold sustainable development agenda with focus on the three interconnected elements of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection eplanation

1. Background Info: How-SDGs ● The 17 SDGs and 169 targets of the new agenda will be monitored and reviewed using a set of global indicators. The global indicator framework, developed by the Inter Agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators, has been agreed on by the UN Statistical Commission in March 2016 ● Governments should also develop their own national indicators to assist in monitoring progress made on the goals and targets eplanation
