WHAT?   Maya 2020 is a Belizean initiative that aims to end the illegal deforestation and degradation of the Chiquibul Forest in Belize by the start of 2020. Weaving together international best practice and successful innovations from around the world, Maya 2020 will synchronize multiple lines of action to permanently change destructive behaviors, allowing the Chiquibul Forest to expand rather than shrink, thrive rather than collapse. If successful, Maya 2020 would set a new global standard for forest protection, while preserving Belize’s natural heritage and strengthening relations with neighboring areas. MAYA 2020

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts Conserving Rainforest – the destruction of which is one of the biggest contributors to Climate change and its impact 15. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems , sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. Promoting the sustainable conservation of the Forest and the ecosystem functions it performs such as clean water, reducing soil erosion and providing important biodiversity habitat 17.
