Cellular Respiration, 9/8/10 Objectives: Explain how photosynthesis is related to cellular respiration. Describe how a ray of sunshine ultimately becomes the ATP that powers YOUR cells. JDI: In photosynthesis, sunlight + ________ + ________ is turned into ________ + ________. Since cells cannot use glucose directly, they need to turn it into ________ in order to do ________. This one may be a doozy.

Let’s Take A Step Back… Cells need energy to do work. They get their energy from something called ATP. Where is energy stored in ATP? How is it released? What happens to ATP when we break a bond? Second-level bullets are CFUs. Answers: bonds between phosphates. Break one of the bonds/break one of the phosphates off. Becomes ADP.

How Do We Get ATP? All cellular energy starts with the sun, in the form of sunshine. Glucose = a sugar. Photosynthesis = happens in chloroplast.

How Do We Get ATP? Photosynthesis turns sunshine (plus oxygen and water) into glucose (plus carbon dioxide). What is glucose? In what cell organelle does photosynthesis occur? Although sugar is chemical energy, cells can’t use it to do work.  And that’s why we need… Glucose = a sugar. Photosynthesis = happens in chloroplast. Check it, transition 4 has a sweet pun. Oh man, I just made another! I am TOO funny!

Cellular Respiration Key Point #1: Cellular respiration is the process of turning glucose into ATP. Happens in the mitochondria

Key Point #2: Cellular respiration takes glucose (sugar) and oxygen and turns it into carbon dioxide, water, and ATP.

Just like photosynthesis, there’s an equation for cellular respiration… C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + 36ATP

1 molecule of glucose goes through cellular respiration and produces 36 molecules of ATP!!!! Water and Carbon dioxide are what we call “by-products” (the extra stuff that we didn’t really want but gets made when we make ATP)

Key Point #3: ATP is the unit of energy for the cell

Structure of ATP The energy of ATP is locked in the three phosphate molecules located at the end. Tri-: three Break off the last one, and energy is released, making ADP (adenosine diphosphate). Di-: two Use the picture to your advantage. It appears on the unit test.

ATP analogy ATP is like a fully charged battery, while ADP is like a half charged battery.

What Do You Notice…? 6CO2 + 6H2O + sun  C6H12O6 + 6O2 Photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O + sun  C6H12O6 + 6O2 Cellular respiration: C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP

Opposites! Key Point #4: Cellular respiration are photosynthesis are opposites. What one creates, the other breaks down! Cellular respiration takes the products of photosynthesis, and uses them as reactants. Photosynthesis takes the products of cellular respiration, and uses them as reactants. IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE: photosynthesis and cellular respiration involve DIFFERENT types of energy CFU: what type of energy does photosynthesis use? (Sunlight) What type of energy does cellular respiration use? (ATP)

Man, This Flowchart Rules Photosynthesis Water + Carbon Dioxide Glucose + Oxygen Point again at the fact that they use two different types of energy. Cellular Respiration Energy (ATP)

Prevent Potential Misunderstanding Animal cells don’t have chloroplasts. We have mitochondria to turn glucose into ATP. But we don’t have chloroplast to turn sunlight into glucose. So where do we get OUR glucose from? In humans… ???  glucose  ATP Emphasize: plant cells do both photosynthesis AND cellular respiration.

EATING FOOD!!! Seriously, holy shit. Duh.

WHITEBOARDS Let’s start off with only these two options: Photosynthesis (P) Cellular Respiration (CR)

P or CR? This process only happens in a plant cell

P or CR? This process converts solar energy into chemical energy

P or CR? This process occurs in the mitochondria

P or CR? This process converts chemical energy into a different form of chemical energy. More specifically, it turns sugar into ATP.

P or CR? This process creates glucose.
