Class motto “You are the author of your own life’s story!” My Goals To give your child the academic and social skills necessary to successfully transition to intermediate school To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment Class motto “You are the author of your own life’s story!”

Reading We will be working hard to become better readers! We use the Accelerated Reader program daily! It will be a part of their Narrative Reading grade. Literature Circles: based on individualized reading levels Time for Kids (Expository/ informational Reading)

Writing In our class, we will work on our writing EVERYDAY! We will write an essay, poem, story, or summary every week! Your child will be able to write a strong 5 paragraph essay, term paper, or report by the end of the year using sophisticated writing techniques! MLA Format

(students will have the opportunity to work on it in class) Math This year, we will be learning more about Algebra, Geometry, Number Sense, Equations, Integers, Statistics, Probability, and Fractions using the Common Core Standards! We will be using Excel Math and our textbooks everyday! There is homework EVERY Night!!!!! (students will have the opportunity to work on it in class)

Science In sixth grade, we learn about EARTH SCIENCE! Subjects include: Scientific Method, Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Energy, Erosion and Deposition, Biomes, Ecosystems, Climate, Oceans All students will participate in the Science Fair!

Science Fair Due in January Completed over several months More info to come…

Social Studies In sixth grade, we learn about Ancient Civilizations! We will learn about Archaeology, Early Man, Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Israel, Greece and Rome… Students will learn to take Cornell Notes We also learn about the ancient religions, and what the ancients believed. We will have several special activities due throughout the year… this helps those students who are not strong test takers to prove their learning; students have the opportunity to receive a higher grade then they would have received on a multiple choice test!

Grading The following is the grading scale used to correct all projects, papers, quizzes, and tests: 100 – 90% A 89 – 80% B 79 – 70% C 69 – 60% D 59 and below F Students earn the grades they are given. Quality work that is to the best of their ability is expected at all times. It is mandatory that you check Parent Connect weekly (Q). Please send in an email to your child’s teacher if you do not have your log-in information.

Grading If homework is not turned in or incomplete, the student may have to work on unfinished assignments during their recess time supervised by one of the teachers. All papers not turned in on time will receive a grade of “0” unless other arrangements have been made with the teacher due to illness or other circumstances. Absences hurt GRADES! If there is a serious family problem, please email or send a note explaining the situation, so that extensions may be given.

Homework I assign about 1 hour of homework Monday through Thursday. This includes 20 to 30 minutes of reading EVERY DAY. The Corona-Norco School District’s policy on homework suggests that a time allotment up to 1 hour a night be given to sixth grade students. This is an hour for the “Average” student. This does not include time for breaks, so expect to spend a longer amount of time if your child gets off task or is constantly taking breaks. Your child’s homework is due first thing in the morning.

Communication Folders All student work and flyers from the school will be distributed to go home on Tuesday. Please DO NOT dispose of any papers. Students responsibilities: IT IS THE CHILD’S RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE CARE OF THE MATERIALS IN THE FOLDER AND PRESENT IT TO YOU. Students need to have their parents sign, date, and return folders the next day Students need to collect their papers and place in their folder every Tuesday morning Other means of communication Mswicketts6thgrade.com Remind App (please join asap) Teacher Email (Phone is not a good option)
