Competition begins in the library on the 7th with winners announced by the 16th. A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will be awarded for each grade level. It's not about Kings, Queens, and Rooks, but rather, quadrants and coordinates, thinking strategically and foreseeing consequences. It's about lines and angles, weighing options and making decisions. Chess might just be the perfect teaching and learning tool. Research shows, there is a strong correlation between learning to play chess and academic achievement. November 1st to November 30th  Winner Announced: December 1st Picture Book Month   Activities: Students will learn to utilize online tool StoryBird to enter the library Picture Book Contest. They will create their own unique picture book. The winner's book will be published and added to the library collection. Read-Aloud will also be held in the library to showcase great picture books in our collection. Picture Book Month is an international literacy initiative that celebrates the print picture book during the month of November. Dianne de Las Casas (author & storyteller) and her team co-founded the month-long celebration to champion the power and beauty of picture books. Mock Election: November 1st to November 8th  Scavenger Hunt: November 1st to November 30th Project Vote Activities: We will follow all the goings-on with online resources as well as news stations on our Direct TV for Education which provide in-depth coverage, and Monitor newspaper subscription. Students hunt through these resources sources for election-related scavenger hunt. With the exciting 2016 election this month students will look at decisions of primary importance and explore the voting process and help students understand the impact of this year's Election. Elections offer a unique opportunity for students to learn about the political process and to witness the wheels of democracy in motion.
