Space SIG Impact Encompassed by two initiatives – CELESTIAL and JEDI CELESTIAL still in formative stages; will see pieces this year, but rollout next year JEDI ready for operation now

Technical Projects Heart of what the Space SIG is about The primary “work” of the Space SIG Individual 5-person teams Project Manager, 4+ Project Engineers Conduct various forms of space engineering May or may not be multiple teams contributing to a whole More complex effort = multiple teams

Synergy Among Projects NSBESAT (reformulating) Develop hardware skills of members and place NSBE hardware in space East Africa Spaceport Feasibility Lead to the inclusion of Africa in global space activity MDRS Better understand how humans can operate in planetary habitats Arusha Show transition from exploration to utilization of the Moon VHSF Overarching plan for US human spaceflight leading up to Arusha-like activity

Impact of Projects Products and Outreach Technical papers Engineering specifications CAD models Scale models Prototypes and mockups Experiments Analog missions and simulations Flight Hardware

Impact of Projects Products and Outreach Product Impact Sharpen/build technical skills of participants Establish Black space technical networks Jumpstart Black-owned aerospace businesses Demonstrate collective competence/capability of African American engineers Document new inventions / innovative techniques Answer unanswered questions in global spaceflight Technical/engineering basis for all JEDI outreach

Impact of Projects Products and Outreach Space industry hiring – increase Black hires Internal company pipeline – increase Black hires NSBE 2025 – 10,000 African American undergraduate degrees awarded annually by 2025 Space SIG membership pipeline – create smooth transition between student and professional membership Institutionalization of space technology within the Black community – space products of Black origin Partnerships – industry, academia, federal, NSBE

Jumpstart to Engineering Design and Invention JEDI Jumpstart to Engineering Design and Invention

JEDI The means by which the Space SIG impacts youth JEDI does NOT create new youth groups/organizations, merely taps into existing youth structures and introduces space content developed from Space SIG technical projects Boys/Girls Club, Boy/Girl Scouts, Church Youth Groups, Greek youth outreach organizations, Jack & Jill, NSBE Jr. chapters, Little league teams, school classrooms, etc. Focus on identifying youth groups with predominantly Black demographics Focus on groups that feed into the next level above e.g. feeder schools

Impact of Projects Products and Outreach JEDI Power 5 JEDI Mentors per Project Team 1 JEDI Padawan per JEDI Mentor Each JEDI Padawan forms a JEDI Enclave 5+ NSBE students per Enclave Each JEDI Enclave forms 3+ JEDI Initiate Clusters 5+ JEDI Initiates per Cluster Each JEDI Initiate Cluster forms 3+ JEDI Trainee Circles 5+ JEDI Trainees per Circle Each JEDI Trainee Circle conducts 3+ Youngling Outreach Events Each JEDI Youngling Event includes 50+ students

Impact of Projects Products and Outreach JEDI Power JEDI Mentors only do the engineering technical work JEDI Padawans assist their Mentor and form Enclave Enclave supports Padawan technical work and forms Clusters Cluster supports Enclave technical work (age appropriate) and forms Circles Circle supports Cluster technical work (age appropriate) and conducts Youngling outreach Younglings inspired by STEM presentations

Impact of Projects Products and Outreach JEDI Power JEDI Mentor work may lead to patents, industry presentations/publications, prototypes, flight hardware, etc. JEDI Padawan/Enclave work may lead to thesis topics, senior design or special topics projects, technical paper competitions, etc. JEDI Initiate and Trainee work may lead to science fair and extra credit projects JEDI Youngling outreach may lead to STEM career commitments

Impact of Projects JEDI Power For each technical project team 5 JEDI Mentors (Professional / Graduate Student) 5 JEDI Padawans (Undergraduate) 5 JEDI Enclaves 25+ NSBE students (Undergraduate) 15+ JEDI Initiate Clusters 75+ JEDI Initiates (9-12) 45+ JEDI Trainee Circles 225+ JEDI Trainees (6-8) 135+ Youngling Outreach Events 6750+ Younglings Impacted (K-5)

Impact of Projects JEDI Example – Arusha Rover Cockpit Project Technical Work – design the forward section of the Arusha Rover Crew Seating Crew Stations Dining/Meeting Table Windows Stowage Assign each Padawan to assist with one of the above Padawan enlists their Enclave to assist

Impact of Projects JEDI Example – Arusha Rover Cockpit Padawan & Enclave assigned to Crew Seating Divides seating into three areas Seat Seat base Seat rails Assigns one Initiate Cluster to help with each Initiate Cluster assigned to seat Task: research commercial seat options Auto (truck/van/car) seats Boat seats Building (office/dining room) seats Assigns one Trainee Circle to help with each

Impact of Projects JEDI Example – Arusha Rover Cockpit Trainee Circle assigned to Auto seats Collects data on auto seats Holds Youngling outreach event about why the right seat design matters Uses standard Arusha outreach developed by JEDI Councilor for Younglings Uses standard seat design outreach developed by Jedi Councilor for Younglings Demonstrate different seats for different tasks Show how engineering is used in seat design Total of 7080 African Americans (student and adult) impacted by Arusha Rover Cockpit Design Arusha Rover cockpit IS a design of the Black community

Recruiting Filling Vacancies

Space SIG Leadership Leadership is more than the Board of Directors Every member is a leader in certain areas Need you to be a self-starter, not waiting for instruction in everything Be here because of YOUR passion, not someone else’s Find (or create) the place in the Space SIG that matches your purpose for living

Membership Need Space SIG currently needs 300 NSBE Professionals to fill all of the duties presently identified Technical Project Teams 36 Total Project Teams, 181 People Outreach Project Teams 4 Total Project Teams, 31 People Meeting Planning Teams 4 Meeting Planning Teams, 67 People Leadership Teams 2 Leadership Teams, 21 People 181 + 31 + 67 + 21 = 300

Membership Drive Now through July 5 is a Space SIG membership drive Primary focus is to get NSBE Professionals and African Americans not involved with NSBE to join the Space SIG and select a specific role Most project teams are NOT filled; often only one or two members (who are new) Difficult to effectively begin work Asking those who have signed up to help find others to sign up

He Who Fails to Plan Plans to Fail Making This Work He Who Fails to Plan Plans to Fail
