612 Youth Engagement Project Since 2011: $940,000 in grants In 2015: 2500 young people participated in summer programs In 2016: 90 proposals received $225,000 in grants made Very Competitive! 612-YEP (named by the young people!) started in 2011 as a joint venture between the Minneapolis Foundation and the Minneapolis Youth Coordinating Board. Designed in response to the citywide Blueprint for Action to Prevent Youth Violence, 612-YEP engages young people to learn about philanthropy and work with adults to fund summer programs in Minneapolis and beyond. Since 2011, $940,000 has been granted! These grants are underwritten by the City of Minneapolis and donor advised funds at The Minneapolis Foundation. In 2015 alone we were able to support 2500 young people from Minneapolis in having summer camp experiences. In 2016, we received 90 proposals totaling more than $600K in requests. We were able to make $225,000 in grants – so this is very competitive!!

612 Youth Engagement Project “No decision about us, without us” Since 2011 we have partnered with the amazing young people and youth leaders from the Youth Coordinating Board. These young people volunteer their time as part of their YCB positions to read all of the proposals that come in through the 612 YEP program. They score them, discuss them, and ultimately are the ones who decide which projects receive funding!(Click on the photo to watch a video about them!)

Funding Criteria Neighborhood-Based Experiences $2,500 - $5,000 Simpson Housing Services $3,000 50 youth, 40 hours each Youth-led program decisions, with mentoring of younger children by older youth Our first grant level is “Neighborhood Based Experiences” These are what they sounds like – those opportunities for young people in the neighborhood, that don’t require much travel and are no overnight camps. Examples might include a local mural project, a youth garden, or a performance piece. For Example: Simpson Housing Services ($3000) Proposal stood out because: youth choose the activities, and there is a mentoring component between older and younger youth.*** While not required, an element of Youth Voice either in developing your proposal or in the program itself is very appealing to the young people reading the proposal!

Funding Criteria Day Trip: Outdoor Experiences $2,500 - $7,500 Dream of Wild Health $7,500 116 youth, 140 hours each A variety of healthy food cooking and growing, cultural knowledge, and leadership skills locally and in Hugo Our next funding level is “Day Trip: Outdoor Experiences” These are, again, what they sound like  They are opportunities for young people to explore nature and the outdoors, often outside of their neighborhoods. For Example: Dream of Wild Health ($7,500) Proposal stood out because: they concisely stated the need as improving health, growing job readiness, and increasing cultural awareness among this population. They do an excellent job of describing why THIS program has an impact on THIS population, now and in the future.

Funding Criteria Camp-Based: Residential Experiences $5,000 - $10,000 Casa de Esperanza $10,000 45 girls, for 72 hours each 2 night, 3 day camp experience that includes kayaking, swimming, and leadership sessions Finally, our “Camp-Based: Residential Experiences” For Example: Casa de Esperanza ($10,000) Proposal stood out because: They used bullet points to clearly articulate the goals the project would achieve, and used numbers clearly throughout. This opportunity reaches a good number of young people for a good amount of time and experiences are both outdoor and leadership based.

Funding Criteria Activity must occur between June and August of 2017. Activity must engage the target audience: underserved youth from Minneapolis. Activity must occur within the state of Minnesota. You are encouraged to demonstrate youth involvement in the design and implementation of the activity. Previous grant approval or denial is not a decision-making factor. Our reviews are looking for you to address this criteria clearly!! Key: Your young people must come from MPLS, but you do not need your activities to take place in MPLS. They must occur in MN!! Key: Please describe how you define ‘underserved’ – our reviewers are looking for demographic information!! Key: Again, youth involvement in the design and implementation is not required but very appealing to our reviewers!

Budget Document – Use it! We want the young people reading your proposals to be comparing apples to apples, and for the budget you submit to help them visualize what you will do with the funds. We’d recommend using this form as a project budget vs your organizational budget, to keep things simple. Remember: they are looking at this and trying to better understand how you will use the funds so be clear!! While there is not section for ‘budget narrative’, please incorporate information into the narrative portion of your proposal if necessary.

Tips Clear + Concise Address all criteria Adults vs Youth - Can the reviewer easily understand both your GOAL and the NEED you are meeting through this project? Address all criteria Can the reviewer easily understand who your population is? And what their demographics are? Adults vs Youth - Their experiences are fewer, and can’t read between the lines! Just a few notes on writing these proposals, for the audience reading them: You all work with young people, so use what you know about them in writing this proposal Don’t ‘dumb it down’ – this is an opportunity to bring your A game when it comes to being clear and concise Remember: these young people don’t know what you know, and they can’t read between the lines or draw on their years of experience.
