International Chrysalis Indonesia 2015 TEAM BUILDING: PRINCIPLES, PRACTICES john m. dettoni, ph.d. International Chrysalis Indonesia 2015

SOME PRELIMINARY QUESTIONS to FOCUS OUR THINKING about team leadership

At your table, answer the following questions:

Why do leaders need a team?

What are some major purposes of a team?

What are some major roles, authority, power, responsibilities of Team leaders?

That is, how does a Team know What does success look like for a Team? That is, how does a Team know it is successful?

List some necessary steps to build a SUCCESSFUL Team

Now to some further thoughts… See handout: “Roles of Team Leaders, Building a Team, Motivating Team Members”

Are you in “secular” business? The following principles apply to you in your business. Not feel comfortable using “spiritual” language? That is o.k. Purpose of Teams is still the same. Each of us is called to serve Christ in the world and in His Church.

in order just to accomplish Team does NOT exist in order just to accomplish a task or a set of tasks!!

in order to help people to: Teams exist in order to help people to: learn, grow, develop, mature!!

a TASK group focuses on getting jobs done

so all will grow & develop because Teams Members work together so all will grow & develop because all members of the Team are working together

Responsibility of team leaders is not “get the job done right.”

The Christian group leader’s job is primarily to help people to learn, grow, develop, mature in Christ in all things.

Work is not the reason people exist.

People exist to grow and develop through their tasks to become more and more like Christ

Tasks are secondary to people!!!!

REASONS FOR Having a TEAM

Exodus 18:13-26 Numbers 11:11-17, 24-27 Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Ex 18:13-26..13 The next day, Moses took his seat to hear the people’s disputes against each other. They waited before him from morning till evening. 14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?”

15 Moses replied, “Because the people come to me to get a ruling from God. 16 When a dispute arises, they come to me, and I am the one who settles the case between the quarreling parties. I inform the people of God’s decrees and give them his instructions.”

17 “This is not good. ” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed 17 “This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed. 18 “You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself. 19 Now listen to me, and let me give you a word of advice, and may God be with you. You should continue to be the people’s representative before God, bringing their disputes to him.

20 Teach them God’s decrees, and give them his instructions 20 Teach them God’s decrees, and give them his instructions. Show them how to conduct their lives. 21 But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten.

22 They should always be available to solve the people’s common disputes, but have them bring the major cases to you. Let the leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the load, making the task easier for you. 23 If you follow this advice, and if God commands you to do so, then you will be able to endure the pressures, and all these people will go home in peace.”

Numbers 11:11-17, 24-27 -- similar situation as Exodus 18:13-26

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12: 9 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.

11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

Luke 9 and 10….

empowering of disciples: commissioning responsibility to do authority to do it authority and power transferred to disciples!!

taught them through observation direct teaching stories, examples, parables, observing the people, participating,

witnessing the Transfiguration! and debriefed them, then sent them out again See Luke 10:1

Empowering by Holy Spirit -- we all are empowered by Acts 1:8 Empowering by Holy Spirit -- we all are empowered by Holy Spirit to serve Christ

ROLE OF AGE, SEX, ETHNIC BACKGROUND, and OTHER EXTERNAL CHARACTERISTICS?

1 Samuil 16:7 Judges 4:1-10 Acts 7:58-8:1 Galatians 3:28; Acts 16:1-3 1 Timothy 5:1

VALUE OF TEAM BUILDING – Why Build a Team? Luke 9 and Luke 10 1 Thessalonians 2 Acts 2

be responsible for all the 1. One person cannot be responsible for all the leadership, planning, and action. Exodus 18

2. A Team is more effective in general than one person Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

One person is not responsible Teamwork is more freeing: One person is not responsible for everything

A model in miniature of the body of Christ in action Teamwork is a more visible example of deep relationships, unity of believers A model in miniature of the body of Christ in action

Teamwork is more fun than doing something alone

one person from exhaustion Teams help to keep one person from exhaustion and frustration, discouragement

of gifts within Body of Christ….. The Holy Spirit gives a diversity of gifts within Body of Christ…..

No one person possesses all of the gifts. We need each other to complement one another ….

Teamwork affirms the giftedness of each person.

Teams build healthy interdependency.

Teamwork helps people to grow into better leaders.

Teamwork means giving one’s life away to others, helping all of us to succeed

Teamwork builds people into the local Body of Christ.

collection of individuals Team inevitably gets better results than a collection of individuals

AND in order to help team members learn, grow, develop, mature Teams are necessary: to accomplish tasks AND in order to help team members learn, grow, develop, mature in every way in Christ!
