Walter Dandy MD 1886-1946 One of three Founding Fathers of Neurosurgery (others: Victor Horsley, Harvey Cushing) Born Sedalia, MO College-University of MO Columbia (1907) Rhode Scholar selection but did not go! Medical School John Hopkins (1907-1910) Surgeon Residency (& NS) under Halsted/Cushing Resident till 1918 Research in Cushing’s lab on blood & nerve supply to canine and feline pituitary glands (papers 1911 & 1913) Remained at Hopkins his whole career as head NS

Walter Dandy MD 1886-1946 Contributions: CSF & Hydrocephalus & Brain Imaging 10 pivotal papers-(1913-1914) Production, circulation, and absorption of CSF Described hydrocephalus- 2 forms: obstructive and communicating & surgical RX Air Ventriculography (1918) Pneumoencephalography (1919) Published the year after he finished residency (1918) Nominated for Nobel Prize in 1933 Primary method of localizing the brain lesions until CT’s in 70’s

Sybil (Betts) McDonald from KC, went to KU (1909) and become medical artist @ KUMC. Dandy operated on her daughter for a brain tumor. 1923 moved to Hopkins & worked for Dandy
