Mary McLeod Bethune Born in 1875 in Mayesville, South Carolina. She was not allowed to go to school with white children. Mary went to school and learned how to read and write. Mary went to high school in North Carolina. She had to live at the school and help take care of it. Mary wanted to before a missionary and teach people about her religion. She wanted to go to Africa, but couldn’t because we was African American. She became a teacher and worked in Augusta, Georgia. Bethune started a school of her own in Daytona Beach, Florida. She worked diligently to raise money for her school. The students helped take care of the school too! Bethune worked to help African American get jobs during the depression.

Paul Revere Frederick Douglass Born: 1735 in Boston, Massachusetts Took over his father’s silversmith business. Joined a group called the Sons of Liberty. The Sons of Liberty believed the colonies should be free from British rule. Revere boycotted British goods by dumping tea into the harbor (Boston Tea Party). Paul began carrying mail for leaders of the colony. Revere made a famous ride warning the colonies that the British were coming. Revere began part of the war called the American Revolution. He started a company called Paul Revere and Son. They made bells for church towers. Frederick Douglass Born: 1818 in Baltimore, Maryland Slaves were not allowed to learn about freedom because slave owners were afraid that slaves would want freedom. Frederick Douglass was a slave who learned about freedom from books. Douglass escaped slavery by dressing up like a sailor and taking a train to a free state. Douglass became an abolitionist who gave speeches about ending slavery. Douglass began writing an anti-slavery newspaper called the North Star. Douglass was friends with President Lincoln and Susan B. Anthony. Both of these famous people were against slavery. Douglass’ goals were not accomplished during his lifetime.

Susan B. Anthony Born in Adams, Massachusetts in 1820. She was raise in a Quaker church that taught her that everyone should be treated equally. Was fired from being a teacher because she complained men making more money for doing the same job as her. She wanted to work for justice, or fair treatment of all people. Anthony was an abolitionist and was friends with Frederick Douglass. Anthony worked with Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Stanton wrote speeches and Anthony would read those speeches at conventions. Women won the right to vote in 1920. Anthony did NOT live to see women win the right to vote.
