Legal Requirements for Candidates Must be a United States citizen. Must be a resident of the 30th Congressional District of Texas. Must be at least 17 years of age, but not yet 23 years of age, by July 1 of the year of admission. Must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents. By law, graduates of the U.S. Service Academies are appointed to active duty as commissioned officers and serve in the appropriate branch of the military for a minimum of five years.

General Qualifications for Admission   Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Test Program (ACT) is required of all applicants. Class rank in the top 40% of the class is typically required. A medical and physical examination is required for all nominees, which is handled through U.S. Service Academies and The Department of Defense. A “whole person” evaluation is determined by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson’s Service Academy Review Board, from evidence of character, scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, medical fitness, goals and motivation.

How to get into a military academy To be accepted into any service academy, except for the Coast Guard, you must first be nominated to the school by either: U.S. Senator U.S. Representative The Vice President of the United States

How to get into a military academy What SAT/ACT Scores Do You Need? At the very minimum, you need at least a 500 Verbal and 500 math on the SAT. In terms of the ACT, you need at least a 21 English, 19 Reading, 24 Math, and 24 Science. The average scores for all the academies fall between 540 and 620 for SAT Verbal and 630 and 710 for SAT Math.  The following chart breaks down the average scores of the incoming class of 2015 for each academy. United States Military Academy The United States Military Academy (USMA), also known as West Point or Army, is a four year coeducational federal service academy located in West Point, New York 50 miles north of New York City. Approximately 1,300 cadets enter the Academy each July, with about 1,000 cadets graduating. Most graduates are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army and have a starting salary of $74,000.  The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades cadets' performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics.

United states Naval academy The United States Naval Academy (USMNA), also known as USNA, Annapolis, or simply Navy, is a four- year coeducational federal service academy located in Annapolis, Maryland approximately 33 miles (53 km) east of Washington, D.C. and 26 miles (42 km) southeast of Baltimore. Approximately 1,200 "plebes" enter the Academy each summer for the rigorous Plebe Summer, but only about 1,000 midshipmen graduate. Graduates are usually commissioned as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. The United States Naval Academy has some of the highest paid graduates in the country with a starting salary of $77,100.

United states coast guard Academy United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) is located New London, Connecticut and is the smallest of the five federal service academies. Unlike the other service academies, admission does not require a congressional nomination. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as cadets. Approximately 250 cadets enter the academy each summer with about 200 cadets graduating as commissioned ensigns. Average starting salary for graduates is $74,000.

United States Air Force Academy The United States Air Force Academy (also known as USAFA or the Air Force Academy), is located in the western United States in Colorado, immediately north of Colorado Springs in El Paso County. Admission is extremely competitive, with nominations divided equally among Congressional districts. On average about 1,200 cadets are admitted with just under 1,000 of whom will graduate. Graduates of the Academy's four-year program receive a Bachelor of Science degree, and are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force.

United States Merchant Marine Academy The United States Merchant Marine Academy, also known as USMMA or Kings Point, is located in Kings Point, New York. It is charged with training officers for the United States Merchant Marine, branches of the military, and the transportation industry. Midshipmen are trained in marine engineering,  navigation, ship's administration, maritime law, personnel management, international law,  customs, and many other subjects important to the task of running a large ship. A graduate from USMMA receives a Bachelor of Science degree, an Unlimited USCG License as a Merchant Marine Officer, either 3rd Mate or 3rd Assistant Engineer.

Ten things to do now! Get the grades - Ninety percent of cadets were in the top 20% of their class but the academies want well-rounded people. Good grades are a starting point, not the finish line. Practice testing - The ACT and SAT are critical. Test multiple times until you score high enough to be above average. Be an athlete - Most cadets play intramural sports, face fitness tests, and undergo strenuous physical training. Be a leader - The academies are looking for leaders so mere participation in clubs and extracurricular is not enough! Always strive to become a club officer or class officer. Work hard to earn school, athletic and community awards. This will separate you from the pack. Be involved in the community - Show that you care by routinely volunteering or working in community programs.

Ten things to do now! Ace the interview - Your interview with the academy liaison officer is a very important part of this process so you may be asked about things like citizenship and your reasons for attending. Catch up with current events from reliable news sources before your interview and be sure to practice with your family so you can answer in clear, thoughtful sentences. Know your Congressman - You need an official nomination to get into the academies (except the Coast Guard Academy). These come from Senators, Congressmen, the Vice President and the President. You may apply to all the sources, but make an effort to personally get involved with at least one by writing letters or volunteering in the local office. Go for more than one – Congressional Members and Senators have a limited number of nominations for each academy so consider applying to all four academies to increase your chances of getting in. Attend summer programs - Each academy offers programs for exceptional students during the summer before their senior year. These programs provide an up close look at the academies and what cadet life is like. Your counselor can help you apply. Start now! - While the academies don't start official applications until your junior year in high school, you should start early. Talk to your high school counselor, your Congressional Member, and the academy liaison officer for your area. Let everyone know you have a dream and a plan to make it real!
