Department of Family Medicine and Community Health We are one of the oldest family medicine departments in the nation, with origins dating back to 1970, when family medicine was first designated as a medical specialty

Department of Family Medicine and Community Health History: 1970: Residency program created (one of the original 15 family practice residency programs in the nation) 1973: Formally approved as a UW Medical School department 1980: Third-year medical student electives in family medicine first offered 1983: Research division established 1990: Physician Assistant Program joins department 1996: Rural Training Track (RTT) first established 1998: Merger with Physicians Plus Medical Group added 50 additional faculty 2000-2008: Statewide residency programs are accredited by the American Osteopathic Association 2012: Department faculty and staff help launch the first Family Medicine Midwest conference 2015: Faculty vote to integrate UW Hospitals and Clinic and UW Medical Foundation. Department officially changes name to “Department of Family Medicine and Community Health”

Medical Student Education Medical student education takes place statewide throughout all four years of medical school DFMCH offers a procedures workshop which is open to all medical students First and second-year experiences include: Patient, Doctor and Society Course, Generalist Partners Program, summer clinical externships, a summer research and clinical assistantship, and elective courses DFMCH leads the third-year required Primary Care Clerkship with contributions from Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Numerous fourth-year preceptorships and electives are available

Resident Education Family Medicine statewide residency programs (UW and affiliated) are dually accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and American Osteopathic Association Diverse educational settings offer residents the choice of rural, urban, suburban, international and underserved community experiences In 2016, 37 residents graduated, 60% of whom remained in Wisconsin

Physician Assistant Program The UW PA Program, administratively linked with the DFMCH, trains students in campus- based and distance Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) programs 44 graduated in 2016; of those who are clinically employed, 47% practice in primary care, and 62% practice in Wisconsin

Clinical Care 20 clinics statewide 6 residency clinics; 14 community and regional clinics FY16: 394,230 patient visits; 32,067 patient visits at urgent care sites

Research $7.5M in research grant funding in 2016 Areas of focus include integrative medicine, childhood obesity prevention, upper respiratory diseases, alcohol and substance abuse and primary care research Wisconsin Research and Education Network (WREN) promotes and conducts research in partnership with primary care clinicians and communities

DFMCH depends on you! The UW SMPH Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) receives a Program of Excellence award from the AAFP. DFMCH faculty Patricia Tellez-Giron, MD examines a patient at the Wingra Family Medicine residency clinic. The incoming PA Program students for the 2016-2017 year show their UW pride with Bucky.

DFMCH faculty and staff are recognized with awards for their long-term service ranging from 5 years up to 35 years. The Wausau Family Medicine Residency Program dons their most festive gear while posing for a holiday card. Thirty-seven DFMCH faculty, residents, and staff participated in the 49th Spring Conference of the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine.
