Causes of the Revolution

Welcome to North Ridge Township! I am your QUEEN and I have instituted the SCHOOL TAX ACT. EFFECTIVE TODAY!!!!! Please take 5 tickets as a gift from your noble queen! DO NOT open your bag, nor sharpen your pencil until further notice. Each ticket represents 5 minutes of electronics time that may be purchased tomorrow. 

North Ridge Township School Tax Act Taking effect October , 201, students will have to pay the following taxes: Sit in your chair = 2 tickets Sharpen your pencil = 1 ticket Get something out of your bag = 2 tickets Ask a question = 1 ticket Leave the classroom = 2 tickets Kleenex = 2 tickets (per sheet) Leaving your seat = 1 ticket (each time) Off task behaviors = 1 ticket If treason occurs, students will be fined!

PreAP Jump Start Get a half sheet reading from the front and GLUE IT into your JOURNAL on page 30. You will HIGHLIGHT and answer the following questions in COMPLETE SENTENCES: Explain the two reason Britain was in so much debt. Causes of the Revolution Things we have seen so far…

Mercantlism Economic theory that says a nations wealth depends on the amount of gold it has Raw materials were exported from colonies in order for Britain to make a profit Cash crops such as lumber, grain, tobacco, etc. Colonies were established to benefit the mother country (Britain)…not for the colonists’ benefit

French and Indian War England vs. France Colonists fought for the British, Native Americans fought for the French. England won  received all lands east of the Mississippi River, except new Orleans. BUT the war left England in huge debt…

New Taxes Increase Conflict Conflict with Indians was not the only problem Britain was dealing with How were they going to pay off the debt from the French and Indian War? Citizens in England were already overtaxed The government decided that the colonists should start paying their fair share

Causes of the Revolution Scavenger Hunt You will be traveling to 4 different locations. Depending on which group you are in, you will either be working along D-Hall or the Main Hall. At each location, there is an excerpt about a British tax that the colonies protested. When you arrive at each station: Identify which station you are at and make sure you are recording information in that station’s box on your chart. Read the provided excerpt with your group to find a summary of the Act/Tax and effects of the Act/Tax Record both the summary and the effect.

Causes of the Revolution Stations You will be rotating between 4 different stations. At each, there are 2 copies of an excerpt about a British tax that the colonies protested. When you arrive at each station: Identify which station you are at and make sure you are recording information in that station’s box on your chart. Taxation Without Representation: SUGAR ACT (1764) Parliament passes the Sugar Act Taxed sugar, molasses, and other products Allowed British officials to search homes of “smugglers” and seize property without going through the courts Effect Angered many colonists who believed this violated their rights Colonists believed in the principle “No Taxation without Representation”

Taxation Without Representation: STAMP ACT (1765) Every newspaper, pamphlet, and other public or legal document had to be printed or written on paper with an official stamp Effect protests because colonists were not asked for their consent boycotted goods and attacked British tax collectors Sent petitions to the King and Parliament After the economy decreased, Parliament repealed (took away) the act

Taxation Without Representation: (1765) Quartering Act Townshend Acts Required colonists to provide shelter and supplies to British troops stationed in their towns EFFECT Providing these things cost the colonists $$$ Taxed popular imported goods glass, lead, paint, paper, tea Passed with consent from the colonists! Boston Massacre 4 Quadrant FACT INFERENCE QUESTION Things you can tell just by looking at the section of the photo. These are facts that can be pointed out in the picture. Things that you can infer about the picture using your background knowledge and evidence from the section. Things that the section of the photo makes you wonder. Boston Massacre March 5, 1770 British troops VS. citizens of Boston As protests to British taxes continued, Parliament sent troops to Boston to maintain authority For many colonists, the British took it too far Redcoats acted rudely, fought with colonists, stole from shops, and competed for jobs in their off time

Boston Massacre A mob of colonists antagonized British troops As the colonists lunged closer to the Redcoats, a British officer panicked and fired 5 Bostonians killed, 10 injured Patriots such as Samuel Adams and Paul Revere deemed this a “horrid massacre” Used it as propaganda against Britain Colonial boycotts increased until all taxes were repealed…except one on Tea…

Boston Tea Party A protest against the Tea Act of 1773 Made British tea cheaper than the foreign tea the colonists were smuggling Colonists resented paying ANY tax passed without representation Dec. 16, 1773: Sons of Liberty, led by Samuel Adams, dressed as Indians and dumped British tea into Boston harbor 342 packages=45 tons= over $1 million today

Tea Party- 4 Corners 1. Should Parliament be allowed to tax the colonists? Yes, as long as the colonists have representation in Parliament. Yes, Parliament is the ultimate authority. No, the colonists should set their own taxes. No, because taxes are a violation of their natural rights.

Tea Party- 4 Corners 2. Civil Disobedience is a refusal to obey a law we think is unjust. Is the use of civil disobedience an appropriate form of protest? Yes, if laws violate their natural rights, citizens should not have to follow them. Yes, as long as them disobeying the law does not harm others. No, the laws are the ultimate authority and should be followed no matter what. No, as long as the citizens had representation in creating the law.
