CompTIA Server+ Certification (Exam SK0-004) 4.4 Server Hardware Troubleshooting

Diagnose problems relating to hardware components and the boot process Follow installation and upgrade best practice and know how to minimize the risk of damaging components Diagnose problems relating to hardware components and the boot process The number in the bottom right corner of the slides refers back to the page where this topic starts in the course book. 4.4 Server Hardware Troubleshooting

Adding and Removing Components Schedule downtime sensitively and inform stakeholders Check that components have been supplied intact and complete Take a backup of important data and ensure there is a rollback plan Create a clean work environment with plenty of working space and suitable anti-static precautions Gather all necessary tools and equipment Make sure that all devices are powered off and disconnected from the mains Always take time and care Update server documentation Get baseline performance 4.4 Server Hardware Troubleshooting

Accessing the Case Chassis intrusion sensors / alerts ESD equipment Wrist strap Mat 4.4 Server Hardware Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting Power Mains power failure requires UPS then backup generator For PSU, check fuses then test unit with multimeter or PSU tester Alternatively swap out PSU 4.4 Server Hardware Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting POST POST not running POST error codes What has changed? Check cabling and connectors Strip out adapters / modules Use diagnostics Check jumpers have not been incorrectly set CMOS battery POST error codes OS loader failures 4.4 Server Hardware Troubleshooting

Using Diagnostics 4.4 Server Hardware Troubleshooting

Causes of Component Failure Overheating ECC / parity memory errors Troubleshooting incompatible components Processor appears not to work New memory not recognized 4.4 Server Hardware Troubleshooting

Performing a Memory Upgrade Check the documentation Use the server vendor specific memory RAM (or to use RAM from the same manufacturer [same brand]) Do not mix different speeds, unless capacity / cost is more important than speed and reliability Cannot mix different types When installing dual- or triple-channel memory, use memory kits Try to purchase the highest capacity modules you can afford 4.4 Server Hardware Troubleshooting

Diagnose problems relating to hardware components and the boot process Follow installation and upgrade best practice and know how to minimize the risk of damaging components Diagnose problems relating to hardware components and the boot process What is the purpose of an anti-static wrist strap? Minimize the risk of ElectroStatic Discharge (EDS) when handling electronic components by minimizing the potential difference betweent the technician and component. You have backed up data and created a clean work area with all the tools and components you need to perform an upgrade without the risk of ESD damage. What other resource should you make available? System documentation - unless you are very familiar with the server model you need the documentation to explain how to open the chassis, locate and undo components such as drive cages, baffles, and so on. What would be your first step in troubleshooting a server where the POST does not run? Check that connectors and plug-in cards are properly seated. What is the best way of identifying a suspected fault in a system component? Run the server's diagnostic test program. How would you solve an error message such as "Operating System Not Found"? Verify that the server is booting from the hard drive. If so, try using a recovery tool to restore the boot files or repair the drive's boot blocks. 4.4 Server Hardware Troubleshooting
