Mississippi DECA Coordinator MDE – Office of Student Organizations What is DECA? Mississippi DECA Coordinator MDE – Office of Student Organizations Change to reflect speaker

DECA – Mission Statement DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Discuss the fact that DECA is available in colleges across Mississippi and even if it is not in their college, a letter of recommendation from their high school advisor will admit them as an independent member.

DECA – Career Choices More than 70 percent of DECA members at the International Career Development Conference indicated that DECA has influenced their future career plans. Note here that career choices must be made prior to college choices and DECA can help lead students to their career and college choices.

DECA – Education Choices More than 65 percent indicated that DECA has influenced their future college plans. Reiterate that careers need to be selected prior to choosing a college. Talk about the time that will be spent in a job is half of the student’s life and research for the right college for that career will help ensure success.

Principles of Business Administration (PBA) Principles of Business Management Principles of Marketing Principles of Hospitality and Tourism Principles of Finance These individual events are entry level events for only first year DECA members. They are the basics of marketing, management, hospitality and tourism, and finance. This event is like impromptu or improv acting. The student will receive the case problem and will be given 10 minutes to solve the problem, then 10 minutes in front of the judge to talk about the solution. All role-play events are only performed in front of the judge and not others. “Fake it ‘til you make it”.

Team Decision Making Events Business Law and Ethics Team Decision Making Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making Financial Services Team Decision Making Hospitality Services Team Decision Making Marketing Management Team Decision Making Sports and Entertainment Marketing Team Decision Making Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making These are your team decision making events that will take place between no more and no less than two students. The students have 30 minutes to solve these problems and 15 minutes in front of the judge telling the solution. The role of the student in all competitive events will be that of the business manager, business consultant, business owner or an employee of the business. The role of the judge will be that of the business owner, business manager, the student’s employee, or the student’s customer.

Individual Events Accounting Applications Series Apparel and Accessories Series Automotive Services Marketing Series Business Finance Series Entrepreneurship Series Food Marketing Series Hotel and Lodging Management Series Human Resources Management Series These individual events also take place at district, state and International competitions. The student will have 10 minutes to look at the problem and 10 minutes to talk about the solution to the judge. Please note that Food Marketing involves the strategies of managing a grocery store setting. Talk with the students about why bread, milk and eggs are located at the back of the store (needed goods and the customer passes everything else). Talk with the students about why chips, dip and drinks are located on the same isle (complementary goods) and why that candy bar is at the check out line (impulse item).

Marketing Communications Series Personal Finance Literacy Series Quick Serve Restaurant Management Series Restaurant and Food Service Management Series Retail Merchandising Series Sports and Entertainment Marketing Series Continuation of individual events. Please note that Sports and Entertainment is an individual event as well as a team event.

Business Operations Events Business Services Operations Research – human resources, IT, and personal and contracted services Buying and Merchandising Operations Research – retail and wholesale businesses that provide consumer goods. Finance Operations Research – banks, credit unions, accounting, investments and other financial businesses Hospitality and Tourism Operations Research – hotels, restaurants and tourism-related businesses Sports and Entertainment Marketing Research – businesses that conduct sporting and/or entertainment events. The student is in the process of researching development or enhancement of Customer Service of a business. Maximum pages is 30, 1-3 members per team. State only event and a prepared event. Students can participate in one of the individual/team events and one state only event at the state conference. Please look at DECA.org to research all events.

2017-2018 Business Operations Research Events Topic The 2017-2018 topic for each Business Operations career category is the development or enhancement of a customer experience management strategy. Participants will collaborate with a local business or organization to analyze current customer experience management strategies and then present a plan to improve the customer experience within the business or organization. Chapter Team Events Community Service Project Creative Marketing Project Entrepreneurship Promotion Project Financial Literacy Promotion Project Learn and Earn Project Public Relations Project These events will cover all of the chapter events. All members of the chapter are to participate and 1-3 members write up the project and present at state. This is a state only event.

Business Management and Entrepreneurship Events Innovation Plan Franchise Business Plan Independent Business Plan Start-up Business Plan Business Growth Plan International Business Plan The entrepreneurship events are all team events with 1-3 members per team. This is a state only event. These are the business plan events that many people use in the entrepreneurship and business fundamentals courses. Start-up Business Plan – All team members must be the actual owner/operator of the business. A parents' business does not qualify. Examples of sufficient documentation of ownership include business licenses, certificates of insurance, tax filings, local business permits. Examples of insufficient documentation of ownership include webpages, business cards, promotional materials.

Marketing Representative Events Advertising Campaign Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan Sports and Entertainment Promotion Plan All of the Marketing Representative Events are Advertising Campaigns. Fashion Merchandising is for only apparel and accessories while Sports and Entertainment is only for sporting or entertainment categories. Ad Campaign is any other business. The maximum number of pages is 11 and this is a state only event for a team of 1-3 members.

Professional Selling Events Financial Consulting Event Hospitality and Tourism Professional Selling Professional Selling Ask how many in the audience are salespeople. Then state that all should have raised their hands as being a teenager, they are all sales people talking adults into buying into their ideas – when the parent says “no” the student almost always states to the parent why they should be able to do something. Each of these events is described on the following three pages.

2017-2018 Professional Selling Events Topics Financial Consulting For 2017-2018 you will assume the role of a financial consultant. A recent college graduate has scheduled a meeting with you because he/she is interested in investing in a retirement plan. The college graduate would like you to make recommendations that will have the most positive financial impact. The college graduate is interested in how much to save, retirement plans available and how long to save. Hospitality and Tourism – Train Hospitality workers in a city that are friendly and helpful – customer service oriented. Professional Selling – Sales rep of a major tablet maker to school districts.

Professional Selling Events, cont. Hospitality and Tourism Professional Selling Event For 2017-2018 you will assume the role of a catering sales manager for a hotel. A potential client is interested in holding a three-day conference for 750 attendees at the hotel and is meeting with you to determine unique and creative catering options. Each conference attendee’s registration includes two breaks, a seated dinner, a reception and two lunches during the three-day conference. Hospitality and Tourism – Train Hospitality workers in a city that are friendly and helpful – customer service oriented. Professional Selling – Sales rep of a major tablet maker to school districts.

Professional Selling Events, cont. Professional Selling Event For 2017-2018 you will assume the role of a sales representative of a virtual reality technologies firm. A human resources director of a major company has scheduled a meeting with you because he/she is interested in using virtual reality technology to create a training experience for the company’s employees. The human resources director wants to learn how your firm’s products will be beneficial to training the company’s employees. Hospitality and Tourism – Train Hospitality workers in a city that are friendly and helpful – customer service oriented. Professional Selling – Sales rep of a major tablet maker to school districts.

Online Events Stock Market Game Virtual Business Challenge – Personal Finance Virtual Business Challenge – Restaurant Virtual Business Challenge – Retail Virtual Business Challenge – Sports and Entertainment Virtual Business Challenge – Hotel Management Virtual Business Challenge - Accounting *****NEW ****Virtual Business Challenge – Fashion All of these events are free to DECA members and take the students straight to International DECA Conference. The stock market game involves investing a virtual $100,000 in the stock market. The Personal Finance game is similar to Sim City. The Restaurant, Sports and Entertainment, Retail and Hotel Management are games that involve the student virtually owning that type of facility. The Accounting game involves the management of an accounting firm and the new Fashion game involves selecting certain colors, styles and fabrics for a clothing store. All of the competitive events involve the student winning $1,000 to $5,000 for winning first place in the nation.
