Text to Speech and Screen Readers: What’s the difference? Text to speech adds speech to text, but doesn’t read the entire screen. It may or may not read the file menus or anything that is locked such as on a web site. It may or may not have keyboard equivalents. Some are FREE! This works well for people who are not fluent readers, slow readers, or individuals who have print disabilities but have vision. Screen reading Reads the entire screen and file menus. Tells the user where things are on the screen. Alerts when dialogue boxes or other information is available. Will read descriptions of graphics in a properly tagged PDF or Word document with Styles. Some programs may also convert text to Braille. This works well for individuals who are unable to see the screen. NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) http://www.nvaccess.org/ Window Eyes http://www.windoweyesforoffice.com/

DAISY-not the flower! A DAISY book is a set of digital files that include audio narration, text marked with special navigation tags, and other files that synchronize the text with the audio. Unlike analogue talking books, DAISY books offer easy and rapid navigation. A book can be navigated by such elements as sentence, paragraph, page (including specific page numbers) and various heading levels. It is also possible to fast forward or rewind and to jump back and forth by time increments when using the audio component. Read with your eyes, ears or fingers. http://www.daisy.org/education Save as DAISY Add on for Word http://www.daisy.org/project/save-as-daisy- ms-word-add-in

Buying Accessible As classrooms start to incorporate more digital technology, it becomes increasingly important that materials used in the classroom are designed to be useable by all students from the start. This requires adjustments in the way materials are purchased, and that, in turn, will drive the availability of more flexible and accessible learning materials in the marketplace. We are launching the PALM Initiative (Purchase Accessible Learning Materials) to ensure this change happens as soon as possible. http://buyaccessible.gov http://aim.cast.org/learn/practice/palm#.UkERiRbTOts
