WHY MEDIA As students of a technologically dependent world the media plays a critical role in creating and relaying relevant news to the public Media allows students to “Be the change they want to see” as they disseminate news and spread awareness with their peers on social networks like Youtube and Facebook

Working with Others This approach to humanitarian crises allows students to work with global actors like Save the Children and Islamic Relief

Different Ways to Spread the News What on campus activities can you do to get others involved? Awareness Tables Handing out Candy with Facts about the crisis Partnering with other groups and doing group activities and events

The Benefits & Challenges You’re able to use social media to connect with your peers You’re able explore a humanitarian crisis more closely through research and interviews You’re able to organize events centered on your crisis on and off your campus Gaining a focused topic and being able to follow through with it Appealing to your audience and gaining their interest in the crisis you’re exploring Finding experts to interview and comment on your focused topic

Pakistan Monsoon Floods

Areas Affected

Why Pakistan? In July of 2010 heavy monsoon floods hit the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Punjab, and Baluchistan in Pakistan resulting in its classification as one of the most worst natural disasters According to the UN News Centre, the floods have, “...Claimed more than 1,800 lives and have affected more than 20 million others.” (10.27.10) The UN has claimed this to be the, “Worst such disaster the UN has faced.” (9.17.10)

Humanitarian Crises Don’t Disappear The UN proposed a 2 billion dollar appeal for aid in Pakistan but has only received 49% of that funding (UN News Centre) Pakistan’s needs extend short term fixes The most viable solution is finding long-term ways to rebuild the devastated regions “Humanitarian work is about reaching people affected by crises, providing emergency assistance, and supporting them through the difficult times.” Ms. Amos (UN Humanitarian Chief) 12.2.10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AGlyHrjmCg

The Difference Stand For’s goal is to make a difference one story at a time...
