Logistical Efficiency with Dedicated Energy Crops C-FARE and USDA OCE Symposium National Press Club Feb. 17, 2017 Sam Jackson, VP Business Development

Genera Energy Privately held biomass supply company operating since 2008, based in Vonore, TN Bringing an industrial approach and experience to agricultural biomass supply Crop production, harvesting & logistics, biomass pre-processing, management services Most experienced company in the U.S. producing, managing & processing a wide variety of biomass feedstocks Custom-tailored biomass supply chain solutions Design, develop and implement project- and customer-specific feedstock supply solutions Focus on reliable supply, consistent quality, highest feedstock value to customer Front-end and back-end feedstock portfolio approach Multiple feedstock sources reduce risks and costs with year-round just-in- time supply Early fractionation allows highest value use for each biomass component stream, including biomass-based materials & products Extensive partnerships all along the supply chain Genera focuses on biomass supply for all applications, including biofuels, bioproducts, biochemicals, and biopower. We custom develop and implement solutions for each of our clients. Our approach provides a fully integrated supply chain, managing all aspects from front to back. Key to the success of our business are our partners in the value chain. Genera is not a technology developer. We bring technologies from valued partners, including genetic providers and equipment manufacturers, together to create a unified system that provides a low risk, cost advantaged biomass supply.

Dedicated Energy Crops Perennial Herbaceous Crops Annual Herbaceous Crops Woody Biomass Switchgrass Miscanthus Energy Cane Wide Hybrids Tropical Grasses High Biomass Sorghum Sweet Sorghum Tobacco Short Rotation Hybrid Poplar & Willow Yellow Pine Genera focuses on purpose grown crops. Highlight perennials vs annuals, as well as woody crops. Genera is feedstock ‘agnostic’ and will work with our clients to select feedstocks optimized for their technology and given location/region. We’ve worked with feedstocks all over North America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. Consistent high-quality material Dedicated crop on a particular acre Perennials offer significant sustainability benefits Diversification of farm income Relatively high volumes of material per acre

Advantages of Dedicated Energy Crops High volume of biomass per acre Reduces production and collection costs Reduced price volatility High Levels of Quality Control Reduces contaminants, variation in biomass Wider harvest windows Low moisture, increasing storability Opens new regions to biomass production Regional production of energy crops Increased rural economic development

Energy Crops in the Supply Chain Many ag crops are seasonal and may provide diversity of supply in various points of time Ag crops may provide the ability to control certain structural/chemical components of the feedstock more readily Annual revenue provided to landowners Engages a broader base of land in the production of biomass

Using Multiple Purpose-Grown Crops Feedstock Portfolio Utilization of multiple crops Reduces storage requirements and storage loss Makes seasonality an advantage Reduce impacts of climatic variation Allows supply solutions with just-in-time direct delivery year round A mix of annual and perennial crops Improves access to land Offers potential adjust area planted annually to buffer supplies The point of this slide is to introduce the feedstock portfolio concept. Using more than two or three feedstocks to feed a single facility will significantly reduce costs and risks. With multiple feedstocks, we can reduce storage and make delivery directly from the field throughout a wider window of time. We recognize that the ability to take multiple feedstocks is specific to the technology and a portfolio doesn’t work for everyone. However, those they can handle a portfolio see reduced costs and risk. Annual vs. perennial simply refers to attracting different landowners with different contracts

Addressing Risk Across the Supply Chain Feedstock Portfolio Increases ability to do year-round delivery Reduces risk of loss and cost associated with storage Provides a buffer for climatic and disease/pest impacts May provide cost reduction to overall biomass supply Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Switchgrass   Biomass Sorghum Wheat Straw Wood This slide is an example of real project Genera helped develop. Direct delivery from the field 10 months out of the year with 4 feedstocks.

Summary Purpose-grown crops are high quality, diverse feedstocks Perennials and annuals provide opportunities for a portfolio approach Purpose-grown crops reduce climatic, quality, and cost risk in the supply chain High quality, consistent feedstocks provide robust end product economics Self-explanatory!
