Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Finding LCI Resources The Liquid Crystal Institute has many resources. These resources are actively managed by qualified staff. When you need something, go to the LCI web site. From there, you can find information, request training, request services and sign up for equipment use. KSU LCI Facilities: 1. LCD Prototyping Facility (resource example) 2. Machine Shop (facility capabilities) 3. Electronics Shop 4. Characterization Facility 5. Organic Synthesis Facility

First, go here: www.lci.kent.edu This is all you need to remember!!

Then, go here:

Then, go here: (or scroll down and choose one of the other resource facilities)

Then, to jump right to the Standard Process Room go here: Or, to see all of the resource areas, go here:

If you go to the Equipment Resources main page, you will see links below the schematic for each prototyping resource area, and a description of each room’s capabilities.

On any specific room’s page, scroll down to find the equipment resources you need: scroll or jump

Then, access the resources you need by using the links for that equipment resource:

If you select a PDF, the file will open and you can read, print or download the file.

If you select a training video, you will see this screen. (A members-only password will be required. This is given out during the prototyping course, and during training.) Submit

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Facility Access First, you must join the LCI community:

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Facility Access Second, you must login and edit your profile page:

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Facility Access Third, you must join specific groups: Send email to bwall@kent.edu with subject “Join Group” or come see me in rm 177, and request which groups you would like to be a member of. Belonging to a group allows you to submit project requests , to receive training, to work in specific facilities, and to receive relevant communications.

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Facility Use 1. Login and Submit a Project Request or Training Request thru the web site:

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Facility Use 2. Manage a dialogue with staff about the project or training:

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Prototype Facility Use 3. Sign up for specific equipment and facility time:

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Machine Shop Resources Where to go for Machine Shop Resources:

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Machine Shop Access and Use The Machine Shop is not an “open” shop. You must belong to the Machine Shop group to use equipment or tools. You must go through training/certification to work independently. You must submit a project request for any work done in the shop. You must operate all equipment in a safe manner with appropriate PPE. You must clean up completely after your work, every day, every time. You must report all issues, and broken items. Tools may not be removed from the shop without permission. You must only work during business hours. You must not use equipment on which you are not trained. Policy or safety violations in the machine shop will result in loss of access.

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Machine Shop Capabilities Common Capabilities (Basic Use) Fabrication of aluminum and plastic fixtures and support parts Band saw cutting Power sanding Fabrication of steel fixtures Abrasion cutting Grinding General material processes Drilling Buffing Tapping Hand tools General mechanical fasteners and accessories Scrap Materials

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Machine Shop Capabilities Special Capabilities (Advanced Use) General material processes Manual Lathe Manual Mill Support Services 3D modelling Advanced lathe and threading CNC Mill Metal Welding Plastic Welding Laser Cutting 3D Printing

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Liquid Crystal Institute Electronic Shop Access and Use The Electronics Shop is a quasi “open” shop. You should join the Machine Shop group for frequent use. You must go through training/certification to use solder station. You must submit a project for any service request. You must operate solder station in a safe manner with appropriate PPE. You must clean up completely after your work, every day, every time. You must report all issues, and broken items. Tools may not be removed from the shop without permission. You must only work during business hours. You must sign out inventory of parts removed from stock. Policy or safety violations in the shop will result in loss of access.
