Year in Review - Highlights & Successes

Community Survey: Conducted in October, the survey was designed to give the community a voice in guiding the efforts and agenda of the CRA board for the next couple of years.   The survey was completed by 200 respondents and there were more than 200 open comments submitted. For a highlight of the survey results, visit www.cabbagetowner.com

Riverdale Farm: Many residents have told us that they value the farm highly, so this is a great opportunity to get out there and support the efforts being made to ensure its success. The Cabbagetown Residents Association has contributed $1000 towards the farm.

Cabbagetown Re-Leaf: The CRA’s Canopy Committee (established in 2011) announced a strategic partnership with Cabbagetown’s very own Re-Leaf organization. Together, we will continue to promote a larger, healthier urban forest through community planting, tree care, tree protection, education, and advocacy. We have committed to supporting Re-Leaf with a financial donation of $1,200 over the next 3 years.

Forsythia Festival: The Forsythia Festival Organizing Committee in 2014 continued to expand the scale of the festival with new activities, greater food options and a beer garden. The festival happened on May 4th and continues to be an important neighbourhood Spring tradition made possible by the generous financial and in-kind donations of our local businesses, and the support of local resident volunteers who run the activities on the day of the Festival.

Pumpkin Walk: Another community event organised by the CRA and local residents. Scheduled to be held annually on November 1st, the inaugural pumpkin walk in 2013 saw 136 inspiring creations lined up in Riverdale Farm. Residents also made generous donations of non-perishable food items to Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank.

New Monthly Newsletter: In an effort to improve our channels of communication, we launched our first ever monthly newsletter in November 2013. Alongside our website and Twitter channel, this initiative has been well received. We encourage you to join our email list and follow us on Twitter (@cabbagetowner).

Mobile Friendly Website: In 2011, we launched a redesigned website Mobile Friendly Website: In 2011, we launched a redesigned website. In an effort to improve the experience for residents viewing our newsletter/website on their smartphone, we have optimized our website www.cabbagetowner.com for viewing on all your handheld devices.

Safety & Security Walks: In collaboration with 51 Division Police Services, the CRA scheduled two safety walks through problematic areas in our neighbourhood as identified by residents. The purpose was to highlight ways to increase safety and security and reduce the occurrence of unwelcome activity through environmental changes and design. Laneway Cleanup: On June 8th, 2014, more than twenty local residents and a handful of CRA board members volunteered a few hours of their time to pull weeds, prune overgrown plant material and trees, pick up garbage and household waste that was discarded in the laneway, and sweep. before after

Annual Holiday Card Contest: In its 4th year, the contest was rolled-out to Spruce Court and Winchester Public Schools. We hope you enjoyed receiving our holiday card in your mail, and appreciated the effort that the young artists committed to their work.

Financial report year ended Dec. 31 2013
