SAVE THE DATE The future of our industry; what’s changing and what can be improved? SAE F&L Open Forum, Oct 26, 2:30 p.m. Lord Baltimore Hotel, Baltimore, MD PCMO Certification Rules (No leads yet) An Introduction to a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Oil Fuel Economy Test, Robert Warden, Sr. Research Engineer, Southwest Research Institute  Heavy-Duty Diesel Greenhouse Gas Phase-II CO2 Measurement Method, Dr. Charles Roberts, Jr., Director, Diesel Engines and Emissions R&D, Southwest Research Institute  Need for Revised Process for New Engine Oil Specifications, ACC or ACC member company TBD

Abstracts (Warden) SwRI has developed a heavy duty fuel economy engine dynamometer test to evaluate fuel economy benefits of improved engine oils.  This procedure was developed be used as a tool to identify lubricants with fuel economy benefits, with a final goal of reducing CO2 emissions as measured by the upcoming EPA Phase II Green House Gas rules. While the EPA certification testing captures emissions information to a high level of precision, the emissions test procedures may not include best practices commonly utilized in lubricant-specific evaluations. Steps have been taken to identify, and then control, factors outside of the lubricant that may drive results. SwRI has incorporated a number of these practices into a test based on the EPA SET dynamometer procedure for Heavy-duty engines. (Roberts) SwRI has been contracted for over two years to provide measurement proof-of-concept to the U.S. EPA, regarding development of the latest round of heavy-duty engine Green House Gas regulations (HD GHG-Phase-II). As part of this work SwRI demonstrated the so- called heavy-Duty HIL Powertrain Test Cell, which was included in the final rule from EPA as an alternative method for GHG emissions certification.  The SwRI presentation will showcase the new test method and discuss details of its implementation and comparisons to other methods for measurement of HD truck fuel consumption (or GHGs), including traditional engine dynamometer testing and full truck testing on a heavy-duty chassis dynamometer.
