At a Glance: Storage of Insulin Documentation – Allergies – Regular Medicines – Time Critical Medicines At a Glance: Storage of Insulin For insulin NOT in CURRENT use: Attach a patient sticker to each pen Store in the fridge in the original container For insulin IN use: Store at room temperature in the POD locker Attach a patient sticker to each pen Remember! Insulin is a TIME CRITICAL MEDICINE Ordering from pharmacy Insulin doses should be given at the prescribed time on the drug chart. Within pharmacy opening hours Contact the ward pharmacist ASAP Check pharmacy tracker to determine when the medicine is ready for collection from the dispensary Out of pharmacy opening hours Contact the on-call pharmacists On weekends, bleep the weekend pharmacist Chase up orders from the dispensary. Inform the pharmacist that the medication request is urgent Human Soluble Insulin 50 units in 50ml and Actrapid Insulin should be ordered from pharmacy stores unless needed urgently (contact the pharmacist).
